5. February 2020Under the slogan ‘A History of the Future’, the Hamburg intralogistics company STILL is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. On February 1, 1920, Hans Still opened his repair shop for electric motors – marking the beginning of a 100-year success story.
(Hamburg, February 3, 2020) Over the past 100 years, STILL has consistently demonstrated an understanding of its customers’ current needs, shaped the industry with its innovative strength, and boldly paved the way towards promising business fields.
The Beginning and the Breakthrough
Just a few years after its founding as a repair shop for electric motors, STILL presented its own products, such as the ‘Lichtstation Matador’, at the Leipzig Trade Fair in 1924. The development and repair of electric motors, generators, and transformers remained the focus of business activities for many years. After the war, STILL launched the EK 2000, an innovative electric cart, marking its breakthrough as a manufacturer of industrial trucks. This was followed by the first forklift from STILL. The introduction of the electric forklift EGS 1000 marked the beginning of a new era.
Innovative Drive Concepts and Pioneers of E-Mobility
STILL quickly made a name for itself as a producer of innovative industrial trucks and as a pioneer in electric mobility. The passion for efficient electric motors influenced the development of forklifts with combustion engines. From the very beginning, the drive concept of these forklifts was diesel-electric, utilizing hybrid technology very early on.Electric drive and electric mobility are inextricably linked with STILL. The introduction of the first electric forklift in 1949, the use of fuel cells, and the implementation of lithium-ion technology were just a few milestones that established STILL as an innovative partner for successful electric-based intralogistics solutions. When the new electric forklift RX 60-20/35 was launched in 2019, STILL was once again a pioneer.
Customer and Service Orientation as a Success Factor
Quality, service, and customer orientation were the maxims of company founder Hans Still and remain among the most important pillars of the company today. The introduction of digital service portals, such as the web-based fleet management tool STILLReport or the web application STILL neXXt fleet, are just two examples of the innovative strength in the service sector. In recent years, STILL has also continuously expanded its range of consulting services. In times of complex networking of vehicles and warehouse infrastructure and increasing automation, this is indispensable.
Industry-Shaping Innovations
STILL has repeatedly demonstrated a keen sense of its customers’ needs and translated this knowledge into new products: The introduction of the first clear-view mast in the 1970s significantly increased the safety of the driver and the surrounding area. Another milestone was the introduction of lateral battery exchange in the electric forklift models RX 20 and RX 60. This significantly improved the efficiency of the forklifts and set further standards that are now industry norms.
