5. May 2020Dachser Celebrates Groundbreaking for New Logistics Center in Erfurt
7. May 2020Since January 2020, the Danish transport and logistics provider DSV and Panalpina have been operating under one flag in Germany. In Hamburg, the merger brings a significant expansion of capacities and services, particularly in the LCL sector.
(Bremen, May 6, 2020) Since the beginning of the year, DSV Air & Sea has been utilizing the former Panalpina storage and handling facilities at the Port of Hamburg for the processing of less-than-container-load (LCL) shipments and buyers consolidation, allowing customers to be fully served from its own network. The 30,000 m² cargo center features its own container depot with a capacity of up to 500 TEU and a container packing station for global LCL import and export traffic. The multifunctional site, with its own customs department, serves as a central consolidation point for suppliers from all over Europe. “Thanks to the excellent facilities on-site, we can respond flexibly to any requirements and, for example, immediately forward urgent sea freight shipments as air freight or pick and manage deliveries in our own high-bay warehouse. The transition between transport modes is seamless due to the connection to the DSV Road network, allowing us to offer everything from a single source,” explains Heiko Vogt, DSV Cargo Center Manager Hamburg. The cargo center is connected to the DSV Germany and Europe traffic via the Hamburg DSV Road location. The operational systems are also interconnected, ensuring that data flow is integrated as well.
Expansion of LCL Services Consolidating multiple shipments from different customers reduces transportation costs compared to full container loads, making LCL sea freight particularly suitable for less time-sensitive transports. Due to the persistently high demand for flexible transport solutions and the extensive facilities of the location with its central proximity to the Hamburg container terminals and the A7, the DSV Cargo Center acts as an important hub for LCL processing. Frank Sobotka, DSV Executive Vice President, Central Eastern Europe, states: “Through the merger, we were able to expand our existing sea freight activities and strengthen our LCL volumes and networks. As a result, we are globally one of the leading providers of piece goods services. The Hamburg Cargo Center is a good example of the positive synergies that have arisen from the merger. By consolidating the LCL traffic of Panalpina and DSV, we are creating additional LCL consolidation services and significantly increasing frequencies and flexibility on the so-called ‘Power-Lanes’.” DSV currently processes 85 percent of all LCL volumes within its own network, connecting more than 30,000 receiving points worldwide.
Stronger Network and More Service After the acquisition of Panalpina Welttransport Holding AG by DSV A/S in August 2019 and the global transition to the holding DSV Panalpina A/S, the German companies also legally merged in January 2020. DSV is represented in Germany with three divisions, which are divided into the business areas of air and sea freight (DSV Air & Sea), land transport (DSV Road), and contract logistics (DSV Solutions). On a global level, DSV is growing through the acquisition of Panalpina to become one of the largest transport and logistics companies with a pro forma revenue of approximately 118 billion DKK (16 billion euros) and 60,000 employees in 80 countries.
