(Essen/Seoul, 15.05.2020) Logistics against the pandemic: DB Schenker is currently transporting and increasing large quantities of test kits for the diagnosis of COVID-19. The deliveries are carried out on behalf of medical companies and are sent to public institutions as well as private companies worldwide. One example is the transport of several hundred thousand test kits for the Korean manufacturer SD Biosensor. The rapid tests for identifying antibodies are particularly delivered to countries where the number of infected people is particularly high. More testing can provide a more accurate assessment of the infection situation and reduce the potential number of unreported cases, allowing policymakers to take measures as precisely as possible.
Thorsten Meincke, Board Member for Air and Sea Freight at DB Schenker: “More Corona tests enable the accuracy of infection numbers to be increased and can thus help improve planning for politics, society, and the economy. We are happy to contribute by ensuring that diagnostic kits are transported quickly worldwide.”
SD Biosensor is one of the largest health companies in Korea. The rapid tests are used to determine whether a person has developed antibodies in the blood that fight the coronavirus. If such antibodies are present, it is a sign that the person has been infected with COVID-19. The blood sample is taken with a very small needle prick. The test determines a result within 10-15 minutes. In this way, it can assist medically trained personnel in diagnosing the intermediate and late stages of a viral infection. This allows for a more precise assessment of the distribution of past and current infections in the population.
Given the reduced cargo capacity on passenger flights, it has been a challenge for SD Biosensor to transport the increasing production quantities of test kits to the orderers. DB Schenker has developed alternative air freight solutions at short notice to deliver medical goods from production sites near Seoul to numerous regions worldwide.
Dirk Lukat, CEO of Schenker Korea: “Can we make additional required capacity available? Our answer is yes – thanks to our experienced and dedicated team. We are proud to showcase our strengths in the Korean market and beyond.”
