4. June 2020The Port of Rotterdam, ING, Engie, and Wärtsilä jointly founded Zero Emission Services B.V. (ZES) with the aim of developing an emission-free propulsion system for inland shipping.
(Rotterdam) On June 2, 2020, ZES was founded: a company that makes inland shipping more sustainable by renting out interchangeable battery containers (ZES-Packs) to inland shipping companies. Later this year, the first ship (the Alphenaar) will sail with beer from Heineken from Alphen aan de Rijn (Netherlands) to Moerdijk (Netherlands). In 2021, five more ships are expected to join. The first charging station of ZES will be located in Alphen aan de Rijn. Gradually, the network of charging stations will also be expanded. With about 20 charging stations, nationwide coverage is available. With two charged ZES-Packs, an inland vessel can travel 50 to 100 km; this depends on factors such as the current, as well as the size and draft of the ship. ZES primarily focuses on container inland shipping. It is expected that by 2030, around 150 inland vessels will operate with ZES-Packs.
For each ship, the switch from diesel to ZES-Pack ensures that 1,000 tons of CO2 are reduced annually. Additionally, there are no emissions of fine particles and nitrogen. ZES was founded by ING, Engie, Wärtsilä, and the Port of Rotterdam Authority, with support from the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management. Heineken is the first customer.
