9. June 2020The expansion of the DHL Packstation network and the development of further automated solutions is part of a multi-year digitalization program. Especially during the Corona crisis, customers have come to appreciate the DHL Packstations for their contactless package handling.
(Bonn, Düsseldorf) DHL is tightening the network of Packstations and has today put the 5,000th DHL Packstation in operation nationwide in Düsseldorf. On the grounds of the University Hospital Düsseldorf, the Mayor of Düsseldorf, Thomas Geisel, the Commercial Director of the University Hospital, Ekkehard Zimmer, and Holger Bartels, Head of the Multichannel Sales Post & Parcel Germany at Deutsche Post DHL Group, officially inaugurated the new Packstation. The expansion of the Packstation network and the development of further automated solutions is part of a multi-year digitalization program that Deutsche Post DHL Group presented in March of this year. The company is making significant investments in new digital services and substantial improvements to existing solutions in the postal and parcel sector, making the use of letter and parcel services simpler and more transparent.
At the 5,000th Packstation on Moorenstraße in Düsseldorf, DHL customers can now pick up and send their DHL packages immediately. The capacity of the new machine includes 12 modules with 101 compartments. There are already over 40 Packstations in Düsseldorf.
“Especially during the Corona pandemic, the Packstation is a very useful invention. The contact between the delivery person and the recipient becomes unnecessary, eliminating a potential source of infection. At the same time, the Packstation is a great alternative for working people for deliveries. It’s wonderful that the 5,000th Packstation in Germany has now been set up in Düsseldorf on the grounds of the University Hospital,” said Thomas Geisel.
Joy for Hospital Staff
Ekkehard Zimmer was pleased that the Packstation fulfills another wish of the employees: “Especially in the difficult times of the Corona pandemic, it is a great help for hospital staff to be able to send and receive packages near their workplace. As a board, we continually advocate for project proposals from the staff, as such service offerings make the workplace at the University Hospital Düsseldorf even more attractive.”
“The Packstation has become an indispensable part of many people’s lives due to the growing online trade and has proven to be a particularly popular and safe form of contactless receiving and sending of packages, especially during the current Corona crisis,” explained Holger Bartels. Since the beginning of the crisis in March 2020, an above-average number of new customers have registered for the Packstation. Additionally, customers are increasingly using the option to send returns and pre-paid shipments contactlessly via the Packstation. Holger Bartels emphasized that DHL is committed to its plan to install around 7,000 DHL Packstations nationwide by early 2021, both for people in the city and in rural areas.
DHL introduced the Packstation service in 2003 as the first company in the German market and operates a nationwide unique Packstation network with 5,000 machines and a total of around 500,000 compartments. The Packstation is particularly popular because it is easy to use and available around the clock. It is also located in central places of daily life, allowing customers to conveniently combine package reception and dispatch with their commute to work or grocery shopping.
