19. June 2020From Three to One: Coop Concentrates Its Online Activities on coop.ch
19. June 2020A new service from DB Schenker checks nearly 9 million square meters of warehouse space worldwide at a glance. Due to the Corona crisis, there is a growing importance for short-term warehouse spaces and the associated services.
(Essen) As supply chains have been disrupted by the coronavirus pandemic, the demand for additional storage capacity is rising worldwide. DB Schenker is addressing this need with the launch of a global space check – a new service to identify and assess available vacant spaces in all 794 of its own contract logistics warehouses in more than 60 countries.
Xavier Garijo, Board Member for Contract Logistics at DB Schenker: “In the current situation, logistics is crucial for companies and, therefore, for our daily lives. With our global network of contract logistics locations, we can provide the necessary flexibility in all key markets. Square meters that are usually used for specific customers to cushion market fluctuations are now being converted into temporary storage options – to support companies that urgently need additional capacity.”
Two Factors Leading to Increased Demand for Logistics Space
The customer behavior changed by COVID-19 has led to delivery backlogs in various regions around the globe. At the same time, the growing consumer demand for certain goods, such as in the food or healthcare sector, has led to an increase in production. This has resulted in a dual need for additional space:
Currently unsellable items need to be stored temporarily, and at the same time, companies are building up inventories to avoid supply disruptions.
DB Schenker’s new offering helps companies that are urgently looking for available storage capacities and relevant value-added services during this critical phase. By implementing a digital platform, daily updates on the quantity and characteristics of available spaces are possible.
“We are convinced that there will be a higher demand for short-term storage capacity in the future. With our new service, we can not only serve the market during the transition to the new normal but also improve the agility and flexibility of our customers,” adds Xavier Garijo.
Interest in the new service is already high: among the first customers are online retailers, sportswear and electronics manufacturers, as well as industrial companies.
