(Schindellegi) The Kühne + Nagel Group has published its 2019 Sustainability Report. The company outlines its performance in the areas of environment, employees, and society as well as governance (Environment, Social, Governance – ESG). The report follows the structure of the Global Reporting Initiative and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the UN.
Sustainability is a Societal Task
Dr. Detlef Trefzger, CEO of Kühne + Nagel International AG, says: “Sustainability is a societal task and the responsibility of each individual. After successfully achieving our environmental goals set ten years ago, we are now starting the next phase of our sustainability strategy. With the Net Zero Carbon program, we take responsibility for sustainable logistics, hand in hand with our customers and partners.”
The environmental program KN Green, initiated in 2010, was completed at the end of last year. All program goals were achieved or exceeded. Over the ten years, Kühne + Nagel was able to reduce the CO2 emissions of its own locations by an impressive 27%. The share of renewable energies in total electricity consumption was 18%, and the recycling rate averaged 77% over the decade. By the end of 2019, the area equipped with LED lighting technology amounted to approximately 3.8 million m2.
With the Net Zero Carbon program, Kühne + Nagel has launched a sustainability program aimed at the next ten years. This positions Kühne + Nagel as a pioneer in the logistics industry. By the end of 2020, the company’s own CO2 emissions (Scope 1 and 2 of the Greenhouse Gas Protocol) will be neutralized; by 2030, all transports of suppliers such as airlines, shipping companies, and road transporters (Scope 3) will also be included. Net Zero Carbon encompasses the three action areas of avoidance, reduction, and compensation of CO2 emissions.
Kühne + Nagel is a member of SXI Switzerland Sustainability 25, the most significant sustainability index in Switzerland. Additionally, the company has been awarded the prestigious EcoVadis Gold Status.
