6. July 2020Podcast: Something with Logistics Episode 43: “Flying Through the Warehouse”
7. July 2020(Leipzig/New York) DHL Express is conducting a special test flight from Tuesday night to Wednesday. The goal: On its flight from the DHL Hub in Leipzig to JFK International Airport in New York City, the A330-200F is to fly particularly resource-efficiently, thereby consuming less kerosene and reducing CO2 emissions.
This is made possible in part by the currently relatively empty flight spaces due to the reduced air traffic caused by the effects of Covid-19. The operating DHL airline European Air Transport GmbH has identified over 50 ways to save fuel on the way to the “perfect flight” and thus also reduce CO2 emissions. These range from a special cleaning of the engines to improve aerodynamics, to an optimized route using modern flight planning systems and the optimal departure route (continuous climb to cruising altitude from Leipzig/Halle, largely horizontal flight phases), to the ideal approach procedure in New York City, where the aircraft can descend with minimal engine power.
