21. July 2020The time is almost here, the new Amazon logistics center in Sülzetal near Magdeburg is starting its operations. From August 3rd, it will be operational. A total of around 1,000 employees are expected to find a workplace here. It will start with around 170 people. On peak days, up to 100,000 packages are expected to leave the warehouse. The focus will be on larger items, such as gardening tools.
(Sülzetal) The Amazon logo is hanging, and the technicians are fine-tuning the conveyor technology: The countdown to the start of operations at the new Amazon logistics center in Sülzetal near Magdeburg has begun. Starting from August 3, 2020, customer orders will be processed there.
The packages from Sülzetal will be sent to customers in the region and across Europe. On peak days, more than 100,000 packages will be shipped from the logistics center in Sülzetal. Before that happens, the technology and processes are still being refined, and goods are being stored. In Sülzetal, there are about 13,200 pallet spaces in the high racks. The logistics center focuses on larger items such as gardening tools or bulk packaging. The products are stored individually or on pallets in the high racks. A total of 97,000 m² of space is available for this purpose, which is equivalent to the size of 13 football fields.
Up to 1,000 employees
Around 1,000 employees will ensure that Amazon orders arrive on time. About 170 will be there at the start, and in the second week of operations, the team will already grow to over 400 and then continue to expand gradually.
For the region, the establishment of Amazon has already become an important economic factor. “I am grateful that a large corporation like Amazon has settled here with us,” says Jörg Methner, mayor of Sülzetal: “The creation of jobs is particularly noteworthy. I am also grateful that the trade tax remains here in our unified municipality. Some corporations should take a cue from this.”
A sign for the Börde district
The new Amazon location sets a strong signal in the district, states Martin Stichnoth, district administrator of Börde. “The investment in our region is a valuable addition to the regional labor market and the overall economic development in the Börde district, especially in the current special situation.”
Shipping employees in Sülzetal start with an entry-level gross wage of approximately 11.66 euros per hour. Team leaders start at a gross hourly wage of 17.07 euros. In addition to the base salary, there are additional benefits such as free life and disability insurance and company pension plans.
