The facility offers temperature-controlled storage and logistics as well as additional services for the food and agriculture industry.
(Neunkirchen) SSI Schäfer, a global leader in modular storage and logistics systems, announces together with Orca, a pioneering logistics provider for frozen and fresh products in the Philippines, the commissioning of the first fully automated cold storage facility in the Philippines in February 2020. Located in the heart of the industrial area of Manila, the Orca Taguig facility increases the logistics capacities in the country and significantly contributes to preparing for unforeseen events.
Orca Cold Chain Solutions in Taguig/Manila is the first fully automated cold storage facility in the Philippines. The facility offers temperature-controlled storage and logistics as well as additional services for the food and agriculture industry to ensure optimal storage and handling of sensitive fresh and frozen products.
20,000 frozen pallet spaces
Orca Taguig has approximately 20,000 frozen pallet spaces available on about one hectare of land. This is unprecedented and has been made possible by SSI Schäfer’s high-bay storage systems. Thanks to the automated solution, Orca Taguig has the capability to move up to 4,800 pallets per day. The automatic storage and retrieval systems in the Taguig facility have also been awarded the “Pioneer Status” by the Board of Investments, an agency of the Philippine Department of Trade and Industry.
The impressive scope of services from SSI Schäfer includes the fully automated high-bay warehouse built in earthquake and typhoon-resistant silo construction, a conveyor system, pick-to-tote picking workstations, and the logistics software WAMAS®.
Currently, Orca operates three facilities in the Metro Manila region: Alabang, Taguig, and Caloocan. All three locations are situated in the capital Manila near ports and industrial areas. A fully automated cold and fresh storage facility is also currently being constructed at the Orca site in Caloocan in cooperation with SSI Schäfer.
As a logistics provider, Orca delivers frozen and chilled food products. Its customers range from the large fast-food chains in the Philippines to exporters and importers, as well as small food retailers. Orca, a pioneer in cold and frozen logistics in the Philippines, chose SSI Schäfer as a partner due to its extensive experience in technology, construction, and customer service.
Inventory security helps against theft
By using SSI Schäfer’s WAMAS logistics software, Orca tracks goods within the warehouse in real-time. To ensure product freshness, handling is done according to the FEFO principle (First Expiry, First Out). With WAMAS, Orca has a precise overview of its inventory and ensures that all goods are accounted for. This also reduces the risk of theft, which is a problem in the region.
In a climate with many uncertainties, Orca can meet its customers with higher efficiency standards, transparent inventory tracking, and top-quality customer service thanks to the technology and innovative solutions from SSI Schäfer. Agnes Degala, Vice President for Sales & Operations at Orca Cold Chain Solutions, summarizes the successful cooperation: “Orca is the first and only company to invest in food infrastructure on this scale. With SSI Schäfer, it is possible to make this great vision a reality. As the sales manager, I have observed that customers are attracted to our brand because of our automation plans. We have firsthand experienced how the market perceives and values innovation. Together with SSI Schäfer, we want to continue developing top-notch solutions for our country.”
