3. August 2020Duisburger Hafen AG (duisport) is planning an investment in the hinterland of Trieste in the ‘Interporto di Trieste S.p.A., together with the Port of Trieste and the local financial holding Friulia S.p.A. (Friulia). Interporto operates three logistics facilities in the Trieste region.
(PressBox/Duisburg) Duisburger Hafen AG (duisport) is currently preparing an investment in the hinterland of the northern Italian seaport in collaboration with the Port Authority of Trieste and the local financial holding Friulia S.p.A. (Friulia). The investment target is the ‘Interporto di Trieste S.P.A.’ (Interporto), a company within the port network of Trieste.
Interporto operates three logistics facilities in and around Trieste, all with very good rail connections, covering a total area of nearly one million square meters and approximately 130,000 square meters of warehouse space. The services offered include customs clearance as well as the development of intermodal and logistical concepts and targeted land development in the port area of Trieste.
Strategic Cooperation Since 2017
The current negotiations are based on the strategic cooperation established between duisport and the Port Authority of Trieste since summer 2017. duisport CEO Erich Staake recognized the enormous potential of the northern Italian port years ago and has promoted the joint development of logistics services. “This is a sensible expansion of our international network, especially for our customers who focus on goods transport in the European region,” said Staake.
The Port of Trieste is the largest seaport in the upper Adriatic Sea. The location is considered an important maritime gateway for Central and Eastern Europe and has developed into a leading European logistics hub over the past years. Furthermore, Trieste is integrated into the maritime Silk Road within the Belt and Road Initiative.
The investment in Trieste is further proof of the international relevance and recognition of Duisburg’s logistics expertise. duisport not only provides experience in the development of logistics areas but also creates an attractive added value for the entire duisport network through the logistical connection of the two locations.
Trieste Port Authority
In terms of net total tonnage, Trieste ranks 9th among all European ports (62 million tons in 2019). Additionally, Trieste is the leading oil terminal in the Mediterranean and ranks first among Italian ports in terms of rail traffic (10,000 trains in 2019). This is due to daily rail connections to all major European destinations: Seven countries are regularly served by rail from Trieste, and 33 train pairs connect Trieste weekly with Germany.
Its special status as a free port is a unique feature on an international level. In this regard, Trieste is becoming a strategic hub for the ‘Belt and Road’ initiative, serving as an ideal access point for trade to and from the Far East and throughout the Mediterranean, thanks to a naturally deep seabed of up to 18 meters. The Port Authority, as the integrated manager of the ‘port system,’ is a major shareholder of Interporto di Trieste, a company that manages three intermodal and logistics facilities in the Trieste/Friuli-Venezia Giulia region, including a terminal (460,000 square meters) in Cervignano del Friuli.
