6. August 2020DB Schenker makes its largest investment at a single location to date. A highly automated high-speed facility is being built in Singapore. It is one of the first integrated air freight and contract logistics centers of this magnitude, coinciding with DB Schenker’s 50th anniversary in Singapore.
(Essen/Singapore) DB Schenker has successfully launched one of the world’s leading integrated air freight and contract logistics locations this summer. The high-speed specialized regional warehouse named “Red Lion” is strategically located in the Airport Logistics Park of Singapore (ALPS) and represents the largest single investment in Schenker’s history at 101 million euros. The world’s most advanced technological developments in warehouse logistics set new standards for DB Schenker’s customers while meeting the highest demands for sustainable warehouse management. With the opening of Red Lion, DB Schenker also celebrates the 50th anniversary of the company in the “Lion City.”
Jochen Thewes, CEO of DB Schenker: “Among the world’s leading logistics service providers, DB Schenker is strengthening its position in the APAC region. With our new logistics center, we will be even more reliable and faster for our customers. The record investment in Red Lion marks an unprecedented milestone for DB Schenker in our nearly 150-year company history. We are happy and proud to further strengthen Singapore as the centerpiece of our logistics in Asia.”
51,400 m2 on Five Floors
Red Lion underlines Schenker’s position as the largest and most advanced logistics service provider in ALPS. The highly automated and integrated warehouse spans over 51,400 square meters across five floors – equivalent to seven football fields. A newly developed warehouse management system and a synchronized IT platform connect the various automation technologies. The productivity of the warehouse is up to 100% higher compared to manual processes. The integration of air freight and contract logistics at one location also reduces lead times for customers by 40%.
Incoming freight is efficiently handled via a balldeck. Pallet lifters and Very Narrow Aisles (VNA) optimize warehouse capacities. The multi-shuttle system and cardboard flow racks are complemented by Goods-to-Person and Pick-To-Light technologies, conveyor systems, and autonomous transport vehicles.
For the first time, Red Lion also employs a labeling system based on robotic technology developed by DB Schenker itself. Three robotic arms label products of various sizes, shapes, and configurations using 3D vision technology.
New Records
David Christmas, Board Member for Contract Logistics at DB Schenker APAC: “Our new warehouse sets new records through its technological and digital innovations. It serves customers with high demands for short lead times and quick processing. Our automation and robotics will revolutionize the entire process of goods handling. This paves the way on our continuous journey towards a fully digital supply chain in contract logistics.”
Red Lion also underscores Schenker’s commitment to environmental protection and the promotion of sustainable technologies. Together with other sustainability features, 1,440 photovoltaic solar panels enable energy savings of 34%. The state-of-the-art warehouse complex has already been awarded the Green Mark Platinum label by the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) in Singapore and the Gold certification from LEED.
The first DB Schenker branch in Singapore was opened in 1970. Since then, the company has experienced tremendous growth: The number of locations in the city-state has risen to 13. This includes the Regional Head Office of DB Schenker APAC. The Singapore location specializes in innovations, consistent quality, and market competence in key sectors such as the semiconductor industry, healthcare, aerospace, as well as high-tech and consumer goods.
