Aug 21, 2020 at 7:00 AMMukran Port Terminals GmbH operates a connection via the new Silk Road to and from China in cooperation with DBO Bahnoperator. The traffic is growing, and currently, the five-thousandth container unit (TEU) is en route across the Baltic Sea from Mukran (Island of Rügen) to Baltijsk (Kaliningrad) with a final destination in China.
(Sassnitz/New Mukran) Since the end of March, Mukran Port Terminals GmbH has been operating a fixed sea route as part of the New Silk Road between Asia and Europe in cooperation with DBO Bahnoperator GmbH under the “flag” Baltic Sea Bridge. After an increase in frequency and the deployment of a larger ship was announced in June due to excellent utilization, the next milestone for the still young corridor on the New Silk Road follows. The MS Milady is currently en route to Baltijsk (Kaliningrad region) with the 5000th container unit (TEU). “The market for freight transport is fiercely competitive in light of the global impacts of the Corona pandemic. Therefore, the shipment of the five-thousandth container unit is proof that we have taken the right path with our decisions and business orientations. Moreover, this demonstrates the performance capability of the modern multifunctional port Mukran Port in the Asia-Northern Europe corridor. The continuous flow of goods to and from China also speaks of trustworthy and reliable business relationships along the route on the New Silk Road,” says Harm Sievers, Managing Director of Mukran Port Terminals GmbH.
Minister feels confirmed
Christian Pegel, Minister for Energy, Infrastructure and Digitalization of the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, sees this as confirmation of the advantages of the geographically excellently located federal state: “The port and the Ministry of Energy have intensively pursued a connection of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and the Russian side as a partner port in the rail traffic on the New Silk Road for several years. It is great to see that these efforts are not only bearing fruit but that a rapid development could be initiated with the five-thousandth container.” “Within half a year, the connection Mukran – Baltijsk has developed excellently and impresses with consistently high booking numbers and utilization. We congratulate Mukran Port on the transport of the five-thousandth container unit on this new Silk Road route and look forward to seeing how quickly we can reach the ten-thousand mark,” says Arne Ehlers, Managing Director of the shipping company BREB, which conducts the charter process for Baltic Sea Bridge.
About Mukran Ports

The port is located directly at the open sea, allowing for uncomplicated access for shipping. Therefore, time-consuming local navigation is not necessary. There is also no pilotage requirement. The port’s own railway, Baltic Port Rail Mukran, is responsible for rail logistics at the site. It organizes the timely provision, pickup, and shunting services of wagons. A total of about 90 kilometers of track facilities are available in the port and station area.
