31. August 2020For many years, Deutsche Post DHL Group has supported institutions and events that engage with the legacy of Ludwig van Beethoven. The creative competition ‘Beethoven in Image’ exceeded all expectations. Svenja Molzberger has won the competition and receives a prize of 3,000 euros.
(Bonn) The creative competition ‘Beethoven in Image’, organized by Deutsche Post DHL Group in celebration of Beethoven Year 2020, has concluded with great resonance. The nationwide competition called upon professional and amateur artists to creatively engage with the great composer and design the BTHVN pack set. The theme and technique were largely left to the artists’ discretion. A total of 621 submissions were received by May 1. An expert jury ultimately selected the three winning entries.
First place goes to Svenja Molzberger from Aachen. For her digitally created competition entry, the 25-year-old environmental engineering student receives a prize of 3,000 euros. The design will adorn the limited BTHVN pack set. Starting in September, the special edition will be available in selected Deutsche Post branches, in the shop of the Beethoven House, and in the Deutsche Post online shop nationwide. The design impressed the jury with its catchy nature, stemming from the citation of the famous Joseph Karl Stieler portrait, while maintaining its contemporary independence. Second place, awarded with 2,000 euros, goes to 32-year-old museum staff member Claudia Graf from Hürth. The work of 20-year-old third-place student Lissy Backmann from Darmstadt was awarded 1,000 euros.
Three Winners
“We wanted to provide an opportunity for creative expression during a time when people had to spend a lot of time at home. We are very pleased that so many people enjoyed engaging with Ludwig van Beethoven. This success also shows the significance and relevance Beethoven enjoys today across all age groups,” says Monika Schaller, Executive Vice President Corporate Communications, Sustainability & Brand at Deutsche Post DHL Group. “Our company has already transported Beethoven’s letters; now everyone can send a package in Beethoven design.”
The winning designs were selected by a four-member jury consisting of Monika Schaller, Executive Vice President Corporate Communications, Sustainability & Brand at Deutsche Post DHL Group, Malte Boecker, Director of the Beethoven House Bonn, Jens Mohr, freelance artist, and Jutta Frankenberg, product manager for the pack sets at Paket. “The call from Deutsche Post DHL Group to creatively engage with Beethoven during the Corona period received an incredible response with over 600 submissions,” says Malte Boecker. “The jury placed value on artistic quality and originality as well as on the assessment of whether they would look good on a pack set and inspire interest in Beethoven. The selection was not easy for us given the many great designs. I am even more pleased that we were able to agree on three particularly harmonious winning designs and about the pack set that will carry the image of Beethoven and his music around the world in time for Beethoven’s 250th birthday.”
Support for Beethoven’s Legacy
Deutsche Post DHL Group has supported institutions and events that engage with the legacy of Ludwig van Beethoven for many years, such as the Beethoven Festival or the Beethoven House Bonn and the Beethoven Anniversary GmbH. For Beethoven Year ‘BTHVN2020’, Deutsche Post DHL Group, in collaboration with the Beethoven House Bonn, developed the mobile exhibition ‘BTHVN on Tour’. The exhibition, which has already been seen at the Gewandhaus in Leipzig, as well as in Los Angeles, New York, London, and other cities, is currently completely virtual and interactive due to the restrictions caused by Corona and can be visited at inmotion.dhl/BTHVN. At the beginning of 2020, Deutsche Post DHL Group also presented a special stamp in record numbers for the Beethoven anniversary. It was designed by Thomas Steinacker, stamp designer of Deutsche Post. The special stamp ‘250th Birthday of Ludwig van Beethoven’ honored Beethoven and the Beethoven Year ‘BTHVN2020’.
