3. September 2020DB Schenker has completed the delivery of a bucket-wheel excavator for the iron ore mine ‘South Flank’ of BHP in the Australian desert region of Pilbara. The total order volume amounted to 380,000 freight tons. Planning and implementation of this transport project took two years. Environmentally friendly ships were used for the sea transport.
(Essen/Perth) DB Schenker has successfully completed the delivery of nearly 200 components for the largest rail vehicles in the world. These are to be used in the iron ore mine ‘South Flank’ in the desert region of Western Australia, which, with an investment sum of 3.6 billion euros, is one of the largest mining projects worldwide. The engineers from thyssenkrupp Mining Technologies are assembling the modules, with a total weight of 90,000 freight tons, into two stackers and one reclaimer. The fully autonomous devices will be able to transport around 20,000 tons of iron ore per hour.
Thorsten Meincke, Board Member for Air and Sea Freight at DB Schenker: “We are proud that the world’s leading manufacturers of industrial plants trust us at DB Schenker for extraordinary special transports like this one. Our team from Global Projects & Industry Solutions has once again proven its competence to deliver reliably, safely, and on time.”
thyssenkrupp Sets New Standards
Zoran Matijevic, Project Director South Flank at thyssenkrupp Mining Technologies: “South Flank is a showcase project in every respect. With the size of the machines, thyssenkrupp sets new standards in technology, logistics, and construction. We have achieved 90 percent project progress ahead of schedule and look forward to a similarly successful completion and handover to the customer.”
With 25 experts from DB Schenker Global Projects & Industry Solutions in Perth, the project was planned and implemented over a period of two years. The gigantic modules were transported on three ships from the Western Australian marine facility in Henderson 1770 kilometers to Port Hedland. There, they were loaded onto special hydraulic heavy-duty trucks and transported overland to the mine located 350 kilometers away in the Pilbara region. The convoys, consisting of trailer combinations up to 120 meters long, passed 27 bridges and five level crossings.
Bucket Wheel with a Diameter of 12 Meters
The stackers and reclaimers will move in the iron ore mine on a total of 112 wheels. The two stackers are each 106 meters long, 40 meters high, and weigh a total of 2,800 metric tons. The bucket wheel has a diameter of more than 12 meters.
DB Schenker is currently transporting additional mega modules for the iron ore mine and the planned 23-kilometer overland conveyor system. So far, 380,000 freight tons have been transported on eleven special heavy-lift ships over a distance of 7,150 kilometers from various locations around the world to Port Hedland. The temperature difference on this route was sometimes around 60 degrees Celsius.
DB Schenker aims to become the leading provider of green logistics. Therefore, this transport was carried out under the CO2 emission targets of the DB Group. More environmentally friendly ships enabled a reduction of the CO2 footprint by 53 percent or 16,771 tons compared to conventional ships.
