22. September 2020Arvato Supply Chain Solutions supports the project initiated by NABU Niedersachsen for the ‘Promotion of Biodiversity on Business Areas’. Together with NABU, the company has redesigned the outdoor area of the 50,000 square meter logistics center Hanover Messe in the Bemerode district to be more nature-friendly.
(Hanover) “Sustainability is an integral part of our corporate strategy,” says Heiko Pikal, Director Central Services of Arvato Supply Chain Solutions. The globally operating supply chain management and e-commerce service provider has set itself the goal of being fully climate-neutral by 2030. This includes switching 100 percent of electricity consumption to green energy, reducing greenhouse gases by 50 percent, and promoting environmental protection through additional measures. Heiko Pikal: “When we heard about the new NABU project, it quickly became clear to us that we wanted to participate.”
The logistics site in Bemerode at Kronsberg, where online orders for the fashion retail sector are primarily processed, offers great potential to create new habitats for local flora and fauna, thereby promoting local biodiversity. “There is a large proportion of green spaces on the site that could be transformed into flower-rich meadows or are still being converted through a mowing management to provide ample food for insects, birds, and hedgehogs,” explains NABU project manager Sabrina Schmidt.
Nature-Friendly Redesign
Specifically, a nature-friendly redesign has now taken place in several action areas. To transform the lawns surrounding the logistics center and parking lot into a flower meadow, NABU has developed an improved mowing management. The grass sods of the areas were sufficiently loosened, and flowers and wild herbs were sown. In addition, nesting boxes were set up on the approximately two-and-a-half-meter-wide green strip next to the footpath leading to the entrance, parking lot, and tram, a brush pile was created, and a hedge of native small shrubs with different flowering times was planted. Sabrina Schmidt: “The newly designed areas contribute to environmental education and also provide additional habitat for animals from the neighboring area at Kronsberg, especially breeding birds.”
A detailed information board with pictures has also been set up, describing the benefits of the individual measures for the environment, while also encouraging employees to engage in their own ecological actions. The costs for the nature-friendly design are shared by NABU and Arvato Supply Chain Solutions. While Arvato covers the costs for the transformation into a flower meadow, NABU Niedersachsen and the sponsor, the Deutsche Postcode Lotterie, bear the other costs.
