23. September 2020Haeger & Schmidt Logistics and thyssenkrupp Rasselstein extend their collaboration in Andernach for another ten years. This partnership has existed without interruption since 1969 for all waterborne transports in Andernach.
(Andernach) thyssenkrupp Rasselstein GmbH is one of the global leaders in high-quality, precision-manufactured packaging steel. At the site in Andernach, Germany – the largest production facility of its kind in the world – approximately 1.5 million tons of packaging steel are produced annually. Both companies were connected through their common parent Thyssen at that time and maintained a close partnership with the municipal utilities of Andernach, which provided the infrastructure for the development of modern logistical concepts with inland and river-sea vessels, rail, and trucks.
The milestones of development over the past 51 years included the opening of the new harbor basin in Andernach in 1970, the first shipments of thyssenkrupp Rasselstein products with coastal motor vessels to Great Britain in the early 1990s, the start of container traffic by inland vessel at the end of 1998, the opening of the Andernach Container Terminal (CSA) in 2000, the expansion of the harbor basin, and the launch of scheduled services to Antwerp and Rotterdam in 2010.
Continuous Expansion of the Port of Andernach
The container throughput of the Andernach terminal has continuously grown from 10,158 standard containers (TEU) in 2000 to 80,681 TEU in 2010, reaching a record result of 156,634 TEU in 2019. Andernach quickly became the largest container terminal on the Middle Rhine.
This development was accompanied by continuous investments from the municipal utilities of Andernach in the port infrastructure. The trimodal KLV terminal in Andernach not only has handling equipment but also hall capacities for services related to container loading. Additionally, the safety monitoring of the ISPS certified terminal and the digitization of the processing have been and are being brought up to the latest technological standards.
“A crucial factor in the development of the port and logistics location Andernach was the close cooperation and the good trust relationship between the leaders and employees of the municipal utilities of Andernach, the Haeger & Schmidt branch in Andernach, and customers such as thyssenkrupp Rasselstein, Weig GmbH & Co. KG, and other medium-sized companies and shippers in the region,” reports Heiko Brückner, Managing Director of Haeger & Schmidt Logistics.
“But the globally operating shipping company MSC has also significantly supported the development from the beginning, and gradually, other large container shipping companies have opened depots in the port of Andernach,” Brückner adds. The most important customer of the port of Andernach and the terminal operator Haeger & Schmidt Logistics, thyssenkrupp Rasselstein GmbH, extended the existing service contracts with Haeger & Schmidt Logistics GmbH for another ten years for the third time on September 17, 2020. “We appreciate this vote of confidence and are happy to continue the proven collaboration with the usual high quality standards,” says Heiko Brückner.
