23. September 2020Rhineland-Palatinate to Enter Funding for Shore Power for Inland Vessels
23. September 2020The state of Saxony-Anhalt supports the expansion of the Rübelandbahn with around 460,000 euros in state funding for Fels-Werke. With Fels Netz, the company operates an extensive railway network that transports around 1.7 million tons of lime and limestone products by rail each year.
(Magdeburg) The state of Saxony-Anhalt provides around 458,000 euros in funding for the renovation of the connection tracks of Fels-Werke GmbH. “This supports the company in maintaining high levels of rail freight transport on the Rübelandbahn in the future,” explained Transport Minister Thomas Webel during the handover of the funding notice in Rübeland. With financial support from the state, the Rübelandbahn in the Harz region has already been completely renovated in recent years, said Webel. Now, the connection tracks also need to be upgraded accordingly.
With the renewed state funding under the “Guidelines for Granting Subsidies for Investments to Strengthen Regional Rail Freight Transport in Saxony-Anhalt,” limestone can continue to be transported in an environmentally friendly manner, said the Transport Minister. “This also means less noise for residents and a significant relief for our roads,” he emphasized.
Fels Netz GmbH
Fels-Werke GmbH operates three connection railways in Saxony-Anhalt (Rübeland, Kaltes Tal, and Hornberg) as well as the public railway infrastructure company Fels Netz. Through the extensive track network, around 1.7 million tons of lime and limestone products are transported by rail each year.
“Through this joint investment of nearly one million euros, the reliable supply of key industries will be ensured in the future. In addition, the funding helps ensure that more than 60 percent of our volumes continue to be transported environmentally friendly by rail, relieving our roads,” explained Dr. Burkhard Naffin (CEO, Fels).
As the second-largest producer of limestone products in Germany (around five million tons of lime and limestone), important customers supplied by rail include the steel and construction industries as well as power plants in East Germany that use lime products for air purification.
