30. September 2020Positive Balance for the Ports in Saxony-Anhalt in the First Half of 2020. Compared to the previous year, the cargo handling in inland shipping increased by 11 percent. This is despite the Corona crisis, but also due to the significantly better water levels on the Elbe.
(Magdeburg) In the inland ports and transshipment points of Saxony-Anhalt, around 3 million tons of goods were handled in the first half of 2020. According to the State Statistical Office, the cargo handling in inland shipping was thus 11.0% above the result of the first half of 2019. With a share of 14.5%, around 1/7 of the total tonnage was attributed to hazardous goods. 61.8% of goods were shipped to or from ports in other federal states, while 38.2% concerned the cargo handling to or from ports abroad. The cargo handling results from the reports on the loading and unloading of ships arriving at and departing from the ports. In the first 6 months of 2020, 0.9 million tons of goods were received and 2.1 million tons of goods were dispatched.
One Third Agricultural and Forestry Products
With around 1.1 million tons and a share of 35.5%, agricultural and forestry products as well as fishery products were the most frequently transported goods. 49.6% of all goods were loaded or unloaded in the ports and transshipment points of the Elbe region, while 50.4% were in the Mittelland Canal area. The container handling on the inland waterways of Saxony-Anhalt recorded an increase of 28.6% to 14,423 TEU in the first half of 2020.
