9. October 2020The Häfen und Güterverkehr Köln AG (HGK) presents its fleet in a new design in red and white. The first vessel to showcase this new look is the tugboat ‘Franz Haniel 14’, which will be the first ship of the HGK Shipping fleet to sail in these colors in the waters around Duisburg.
(Cologne/Duisburg) Initially, it was green and white, then it received a blue and white outfit, and now the Franz Haniel 14, as the first ship of the HGK Shipping fleet, has once again received a new design – presenting itself more modern than ever in red and white.
“It is very nice to see that HGK Shipping is now also taking on a visual form and becoming visible on our waterways,” said Uwe Wedig, Chairman of the Board of Häfen und Güterverkehr Köln AG (HGK), during a site visit in Duisburg, expressing his delight over the freshly painted flagship of the HGK fleet. In the coming weeks, more ships of HGK Shipping will also receive a new outfit.
Franz Haniel 14 is a representative ship
The tugboat Franz Haniel 14, named after the legendary industrialist from Duisburg, was built in 1969 at the Gutenhoffnungshütte AG Rheinwerft in Duisburg-Walsum, but was already taken out of service by the end of the 1980s. The interiors were then comfortably remodeled to use the tugboat for representation purposes. The wheelhouse remained almost original to preserve the character of the ship.
Franz Haniel 14 has its permanent mooring place in the Duisburg harbor. The two sister ships Herkules IX and Herkules XII are still in operation in the HGK Shipping tug fleet. Number 14 is the last ship to sail under the name Haniel. “With its long history, the Franz Haniel 14 represents the history of inland shipping on the Rhine and is thus a very special part of our fleet,” explains Steffen Bauer, CEO of HGK Shipping, about the extraordinary ship.
