Manfred F. Boes: A Prominent Freight Forwarder Celebrates His 80th Birthday
30. November 2020The Logistics Location Bonn/Rhein-Sieg Faces Major Challenges
30. November 2020The people of Basel have today clearly said yes to Dock 3 with 57.13 percent to 42.87 percent, thus also saying yes to a sustainable port in Basel. This secures the financing for a connection of ecological Rhine shipping to the Gateway Basel Nord container terminal.
(Basel) The committee “Yes to Dock 3” is pleased with the clear yes from the people of Basel for the construction of Dock 3. After the Grand Council approved the financing credit in February, a committee, including members from environmental protection associations, initiated a referendum against it. Today, 57.13 percent of the people of Basel confirmed the decision of the Grand Council. “In addition to the clear vote from the Federal Council, the federal parliament, and the Grand Council, this is now also a clear mandate from the citizens of Basel for the modernization of the port. We are confident: the yes to Dock 3 is also a yes to the port, a yes to Basel, and a yes to environmental protection,” explains Martin Dätwyler, Director of the Chamber of Commerce of both Basels.
Gateway Basel Nord is pleased with the approval
The voting result is a clear vote from the people of Basel for the modernization of logistics, the shift of traffic to rail, and for climate protection. Only through the realization of the project will 50 percent of container transport be shifted to rail in the future, saving over 100,000 truck trips annually.
The voting result also shows that our approach to environmental protection and the creation of new habitats has convinced the citizens of Basel. Likewise, we see this as a mandate to implement the compensatory measures according to the concept and with determination, ensuring that our ecological concept succeeds comprehensively.
Only a milestone
The yes to Dock 3 in the Basel Rhine port Kleinhüningen is only a milestone. The crucial factor is the approval for the construction of the Gateway Basel Nord terminal, an intermodal terminal. Before the construction permit is granted, the terminal must overcome several hurdles and endure some legal proceedings. Environmentalists and competitors have ongoing lawsuits. Surprisingly, some logistics service providers are also against the project. Dock 3 will only be created if the Gateway Basel Nord is built.
