30. November 2020HANSEBLOC presents smart solutions for the logistics SMEs
30. November 2020The logistics of one of the largest European manufacturers of electronic and electromechanical components is taking on packaging waste. Würth Elektronik is putting all processes related to packaging goods to the test. The self-imposed goals: drastic reduction of plastics and a shift to more sustainable materials.
(Waldenburg) Many waste-reducing measures have already been implemented or are in progress: In the logistics of Würth Elektronik, only filling material based on recycled paper is used, and its consumption is minimized through the use of separators and partition boxes. For padded envelopes, a plastic-free variant is used, and paper-based packaging tape holds packages together where necessary – boxes with lids save on tape. Plastic bags are being replaced on a large scale by parchment paper bags, for example, for the delivery documents on the outside of the packages.
Cardboard from Grass
On the occasion of the European Week for Waste Reduction (November 21-29, 2020), Georgios Stamos, Head of Logistics in Waldenburg and Environmental Officer in the logistics area at Würth Elektronik eiSos, states: “According to the Federal Environment Agency, packaging consumption per capita has increased by 17.9 percent since 2010. More than half of this is caused by industry and commerce. Therefore, we are closely examining where we can become more sustainable. We are currently evaluating cardboard packaging that consists of up to 50 percent grass. This presents us with special requirements: As we offer free samples and design kits with refill options as a developer service, we have a particularly high number of small shipments. This service should of course remain, but it needs to be provided more sustainably in the future. Here and elsewhere, protecting our environment requires a multitude of coordinated steps, which also involve costs for the company. However, reducing packaging waste is a responsibility that we, as employees and as a company, gladly and with great commitment take on.”
