3. December 2020With 38,000 m2, the new logistics center in Chempark Dormagen is one of the largest and most complex supply chain projects that Hoyer has managed from the ground up. In the summer of 2020, the facilities on the previously vacant site were gradually put into operation after approximately two years of construction. Around 20 employees in five operations now ensure smooth processes along the supply chain.
(Hamburg) With the construction of the logistics center, Hoyer demonstrates its expertise in developing comprehensive supply chain solutions in contract logistics. Understanding details and extensive expertise regarding processes within customer-owned operations are key to this. “The logistics center is fully built and structured according to differentiated customer needs,” says Ulrich Grätz, Global Director Supply Chain Solutions (SCS) at Hoyer Group,
Extensive Analyses
“Extensive analyses, consultations, and tightly scheduled project management formed the basis. Despite minor delays due to the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, we are very satisfied,” Grätz further explains. Hoyer invested around 25 million EUR in the logistics center, which was largely completed in June 2020 after two years of construction. Approximately 20 employees at the site operate the most modern equipment, such as a filling system adapted to customer requirements. Furthermore, a specially developed inventory management software is used. The complex consists of a total of five sections. A warehouse with storage spaces for 10,000 metal boxes filled with synthetic rubber is one of these areas. The Hoyer Group transports these exclusively for a customer from their plant in Chempark to the warehouse. Here, employees take care of storing and retrieving the boxes, preparing them for shipping, and loading them onto trucks.
12,000 Pallet Spaces
In the second section, the pallet warehouse, there are 12,000 storage spaces for various raw materials and finished goods in high racks. “Our services for our customer include all storage-related services such as the storage, warehousing, and retrieval of packaged goods on pallets,” says Grätz. Adjacent to the pallet warehouse is the packaging material warehouse, which has over 3,000 storage spaces. Hoyer takes on a number of logistical processes such as the storage and warehousing of packaging materials, retrieval, and loading. Labeling and packaging material control, as well as various special activities upon request, are also part of the extensive service package. The services are complemented by the filling and storage of polyurethane dispersions. Two filling systems are located in this area of the logistics center for this purpose. The Hoyer team plans and conducts transports from production to the logistics center and fills dispersions into barrels and large containers. “Additionally, we handle the storage and handling of filled containers, shipping preparation, order picking, loading, and shipping,” adds Ulrich Grätz.
Two Years of Construction
The total construction time for the logistics center was around two years. “With the implementation of this major project, we have further strengthened our name as a specialist for logistics services along the entire supply chain of our customers,” emphasizes Ulrich Grätz. “We have also set ourselves the goal for the future: to provide solutions and set standards in the market.” The logistics solutions from Supply Chain Solutions are used worldwide. Core activities of the area include all logistical processes at the customer’s site and off-site, including plant logistics, filling and mixing, operation of intermodal terminals, hazardous material terminals, and dry bulk logistics. Currently, the Hoyer Group is represented in over 30 different operations of international chemical producers, including several locations in Germany, China, and Saudi Arabia. The logistics provider operates where there is demand from the chemical industry for tailored logistics solutions – with reliable quality and the highest safety standards.
