6. December 2020Records at the Austrian Post are breaking almost daily. Therefore, the Post also warns its customers that certain packages for Christmas should be sent as early as possible to ensure timely arrival. The records are attributed to the COVID-19 measures.
(Vienna) The Austrian Post is currently breaking one record after another. In the past three days, more than one million packages have been transported each day. By comparison, the peak value in the Christmas season of 2019 was achieved on December 11 with 765,000 distributed packages. “Due to COVID-19, the associated lockdown, and the steadily growing e-commerce, we are experiencing an increase in package volumes of nearly 40 percent compared to the previous year. We have prepared well throughout the year for the peak season, and the pre-Christmas period in the COVID year exceeds even our highest expectations. Therefore, we would like to appeal to people to place their orders early and plan accordingly, as delivery may currently take a bit longer,” emphasizes Post General Director DI Dr. Georg Pölzl in light of the new record figures. “In view of the enormous package volumes, packages will also be sorted and delivered on weekends during the pre-Christmas period,” Pölzl adds.
200,000 Packages Above Average Per Day
On average days, over 800,000 packages are currently being transported per day, and record volumes like those in recent days are expected to continue until Christmas Eve. To handle these volumes, the Post has increased personnel and put more vehicles into operation. Up to 1,300 additional workers and the necessary additional vehicles, such as trucks, containers, and delivery vehicles, are now in use. Nevertheless, there may be restrictions on delivery for large senders.
Send Christmas Packages on Time
To ensure that recipients receive their shipments on time despite the high volume of shipments, the Post is now calling for Christmas gifts to be ordered as early as possible and to plan for a time buffer when shipping. Additionally, recipients should pick up their packages from branches and pick-up stations as quickly as possible to avoid overloading these capacities. All employees of the Austrian Post are working hard to ensure the fastest possible distribution and delivery of all shipments.
