8. December 2020DHL conducted a spectacular transport of a living elephant from Islamabad/Pakistan to the Cambodia Wildlife Sanctuary in Cambodia. The careful and extensive planning for this long-distance flight took several months. The living conditions of Kaavan – also known as the loneliest elephant in the world – at the Marghazar Zoo attracted worldwide attention.
(Bonn) Kaavan, a 36-year-old Asian elephant, is currently settling into his new home in Cambodia after being safely flown out of Islamabad. The careful and extensive planning by FOUR PAWS, a global animal welfare organization from Austria, veterinarians, and DHL Global Forwarding for this long-distance flight took several months. The international freight specialist of Deutsche Post DHL Group took care of the logistics and the necessary customs approvals for the transport of the elephant, who traveled from the Marghazar Zoo to a species-appropriate home.
Transporting Animals is Always a Challenge
“In recent years, DHL has transported many different goods. But transporting animals is always a special challenge,” says Thomas Mack, Global Head of Air Freight at DHL Global Forwarding. “The multimodal transport had to be planned very precisely. Throughout the flight, the temperature had to be monitored, and Kaavan was accompanied by veterinarians for safety. With our extensive expertise and global network, we were able to ensure the safe relocation to his new permanent and, above all, species-appropriate home.”
Kaavan – The Loneliest Elephant in the World
Following a medical examination, the Asian elephant was loaded onto a truck and driven from the zoo to the international airport in Islamabad. On November 30, the eagerly awaited journey to his new home in the Cambodia Wildlife Sanctuary took place. Weighing over four tons and standing more than three meters tall, the transport of elephant Kaavan had to be planned and executed with great care. The living conditions of Kaavan – also known as the loneliest elephant in the world – at the Marghazar Zoo attracted worldwide attention. In preparation for the journey, Kaavan received specialized training for several weeks for safe entry and exit from his transport crate. Kaavan was accompanied by a team of veterinarians specialized in wildlife, who monitored and calmed him.
Broad Financial Support
“The long-awaited journey is the result of months of planning and coordination between DHL and various animal specialists, such as the EKIPA team, and was supported by local Pakistani officials, American businessman Eric S. Margolis, and ‘Free the Wild’, the non-profit organization of pop star Cher. Kaavan was relocated so that he could live in a species-appropriate environment and receive the necessary care. Everything was done to ensure that this journey to a better future was safe and comfortable for him,” said Dr. Amir Khalil, veterinarian at FOUR PAWS and head of the mission.
