16. December 2020DB Cargo installs the Scandinavian Rail Shuttle between the Danish Taulov (Jutland) and the Swedish Katrineholm (Stockholm). DB Cargo Scandinavia acts as the cross-border operator and coordinates everything from a single source. The trains run three times a week in both directions.
(Mainz) Environmentally friendly and fast, can that go together? Yes! Within half a day, the DB Cargo family supplies Denmark and Sweden with consumer goods, paper, and steel. Since November, there has been a new direct rail transport solution, the Scandinavian Rail Shuttle, where DB Cargo Scandinavia acts as the cross-border operator.
With the Scandinavian Rail Shuttle, the product portfolio of the DB Cargo family has gained an additional offering. Since early November, the shuttle has been operating between the Danish freight hub Taulov in Jutland and Katrineholm near Stockholm. This rail transport solution was initiated by the Scandinavian subsidiary DB Cargo Scandinavia, which now offers direct and regular intermodal rail transports between Denmark and Sweden as the first provider ever. The special feature: DB Cargo Scandinavia takes on the operator role, managing booking, capacity, and execution from a single source – even cross-border.
A transit time of 14 hours
In just 14 hours overnight and with a capacity of up to 38 loading units, the Scandinavian Rail Shuttle transports trailers, swap bodies, and containers between the main economic centers in Denmark and Sweden. The start and end points of the three round trips per week are Taulov in Jutland (Denmark) and Katrineholm, near the Swedish capital Stockholm. Consumer goods are transported to Sweden, and from there, paper and steel are brought back to Denmark. The intermodal direct connection is not only fast but also environmentally friendly. For each trailer and route, 1.2 million tons of CO2 are saved – that is about 80 percent less than transport by road.
“Rail offers an attractive ‘green transport solution’, for which we issue the customer a so-called ‘Carbon Footprint Certificate’, documenting the contribution made to environmental relief through CO2 savings,” says Maarten de Ridder, Head of International Sales at DB Cargo.
Transport bookable online from 2021
The Scandinavian Rail Shuttle is suitable for companies looking to shift traffic from road to rail, thus transporting in a more environmentally friendly and cost-efficient manner. Transport can be easily booked ad hoc and online. The shuttle product is planned to be offered in five round trips per week starting in autumn 2021.
“It is a transport that we have launched with great commitment and passion, especially in this particularly challenging Corona time,” says Oliver Gesche, CFO of DB Cargo Scandinavia. “With the connection to our European network all the way to China, I see great potential for our Scandinavian Rail Shuttle.”
