Jan 18, 2021 at 5:51 PMThe logistics provider DB Schenker is strengthening its existing Brexit task force. The accompanying customs declaration documents are often incomplete. Therefore, DB Schenker has ordered a temporary halt to land transport acceptance to the United Kingdom.
(Frankfurt) DB Schenker is currently observing significant issues in handling the customs formalities arising from Brexit in the goods traffic between the European Union and the United Kingdom (UK). Only about ten percent of the shipments commissioned with DB Schenker are accompanied by complete and correct documents. In contrast, a large portion of the shipments has deficiencies in the documentation.
Employees trained specifically for Brexit at DB Schenker are available to assist customers around the clock in completing the necessary customs papers. Nevertheless, any shipment that is not properly documented delays the delivery of complete loads. Incomplete shipments cannot be delivered on-site.
Shipments Already Received Will Be Delivered as Soon as Possible
To manage the increased workload, DB Schenker is mobilizing additional resources in its Brexit Task Force, which has been in place for over a year, for the subsequent preparation of customs papers. However, the acceptance of new shipments to the United Kingdom must be temporarily suspended. DB Schenker emphasizes that already dispatched shipments will continue to be delivered as quickly as possible.
DB Schenker expects a further increase in shipment volume in January. The logistics service providers will only be able to process this quickly if the proportion of shipments with complete papers rises significantly. Both the sender and the recipient are obliged to provide compliant documents for this purpose. Since Brexit, this includes, for example, proof of the place of manufacture of the goods being shipped, a customs-compliant invoice, and the customs authorization of the freight company. At the same time, the importer must also issue a customs power of attorney and provide the necessary customs-related information. In particular, DB Schenker recommends close communication between the sender and the recipient regarding the latter.
DB Schenker appeals to all senders and recipients in the goods traffic between the EU and the UK to utilize the available information offerings and to carefully adhere to the new customs formalities in their own interest. A customs exemption for many goods manufactured in the EU also does not exempt from the obligation to present complete customs papers.
