Logistics suffers from poor Brexit preparation of customers, according to DSLV
20. January 2021The Federal Association of Parcel and Express Logistics e. V. (BIEK) is pleased about an absolute record result of the German parcel services in 2020. The parcel volume grew by 80 million to 435 million shipments compared to 2019. This is 15 million shipments more than projected. The total KEP sector accounted for even 775 million KEP shipments (B2C and B2B).
(Berlin) In the Christmas business of 2020 (November and December), parcel services in Germany transported a record volume of around 775 million courier, express, and parcel shipments (KEP shipments). The main driver was the parcel shipments to end consumers: They increased by 80 million compared to the Christmas business of 2019 to 435 million shipments (B2C parcel shipments, excluding express and courier). This is about 15 million more shipments than expected in October. This and other results are provided by the final analysis of the Christmas business 2020, which was conducted by KE-CONSULT Kurte&Esser GbR on behalf of the Federal Association of Parcel and Express Logistics (BIEK).
Growth in All Areas
The growth in parcel shipments to end consumers was more than 2.5 times higher due to Corona compared to the previous year: 23 percent more B2C parcel shipments than in the Christmas business of 2019 were transported. The lockdown measures further increased the expected growth of up to 20 percent in October. However, there was also a significant increase in parcel shipments from private individuals to private individuals (C2C parcel shipments).
Of the 775 million KEP shipments, 440 million were B2C shipments (courier, express, and parcel) and around 300 million were B2B shipments (courier, express, and parcel). On a typical peak day, up to 22 million shipments were transported by KEP companies. To manage the high volumes, companies relied on approximately 30,000 additional workers.
Parcel Service Providers Proved They Can Be Counted On
BIEK Chairman Marten Bosselmann is impressed by the outstanding performance of his member companies: “Even – and especially – in this difficult time, parcel service providers have proven that they can be counted on. The Christmas business is already a challenging time without Corona, as significantly more shipments are sent in November and December than in the other months. This year, however, parcel services made a particularly significant contribution to ensuring that people could still gift their loved ones during the festive season despite massive restrictions. The gifts were timely under the Christmas tree because the KEP companies were prepared for the immense challenges. Once again, the industry has impressively demonstrated: no Christmas without parcel services.”
