23. January 2021The logistics service provider RheinCargo GmbH & Co. KG, part of the HGK Group, and the PVC manufacturer Vinnolit GmbH & Co. KG continue their long-standing collaboration. The contract includes the delivery of rock salt to Vinnolit’s production facilities in Hürth-Knapsack. For this purpose, RheinCargo built a new salt storage facility in the Cologne-Godorf port and acquired 28 special wagons for salt transport.
(Köln/Neuss) The logistics service provider RheinCargo and the leading European PVC supplier Vinnolit have agreed to further expand their long-standing partnership. A new long-term contract underscores both parties’ desire for continuity. To facilitate an expansion of the collaboration, RheinCargo constructed a new salt storage facility in the Cologne-Godorf port and acquired a total of 28 special wagons for salt transport.
“We are very pleased that we will continue our long-standing collaboration with Vinnolit. The long duration of the new contract provides both partners with a high degree of planning security. Our investments in the wagons and the salt storage are therefore very well placed,” explain the two RheinCargo managing directors Wolfgang Birlin and Jan Sönke Eckel.
Transport of Rock Salt to Production Facilities
The contract includes the transport of rock salt to the Vinnolit production facilities in Hürth-Knapsack. In addition, RheinCargo transports caustic soda for Vinnolit by rail. To handle and transport larger quantities, RheinCargo has built and commissioned a dedicated salt storage facility on the port premises in Godorf. “By constructing the special dry storage, we were able to meet the requirements for the interim storage of rock salt and thus increase the supply security for our customer in connection with a sustainable transport concept,” explains Lukas Klippel, Head of Port Logistics Sales at RheinCargo.

In December, 28 new special wagons were also delivered. Thanks to these investments, it is now possible to further increase the handling and transport volume of rock salt via the Cologne-Godorf port and process it through the freight railway. This helps avoid truck trips, leading to a significant reduction in CO2 emissions and thus a sustainable preservation of the environment.
10 Tons More Load Capacity per Wagon
In close coordination between RheinCargo and Vinnolit, the wagons were developed, specifically equipped for salt transport. The black-painted models were built and delivered by the manufacturer On Rail, which produces special wagons according to specific customer requirements. The most important innovation is a novel bogie that features rubber suspension and thus cannot rust. The construction operates extremely quietly, significantly undercutting the tightened noise protection limits for new freight wagons.
Compared to the previous wagons, the new models have a load limit that is approximately 10 tons higher. The entire wagon body is equipped with corrosion-resistant special coatings both inside and out. “The vehicles are technically very innovative and promise significantly longer durability and better reliability,” assesses Daniel Jacobs, Head of RC Railway Vehicle Management, regarding the new acquisitions.
