27. January 2021Spectos GmbH has published its E-Commerce Monitor 2021. Has the Corona pandemic changed online shopping behavior? What delivery times do consumers consider acceptable? What alternatives to direct delivery are online shoppers willing to use? How important is sustainability in delivery logistics? Answers to these and other questions are provided in the monitor.
(Dresden) For the third consecutive year, Spectos GmbH is conducting a nationwide survey in Germany to gather the opinions of users of parcel services. Participants in the Spectos market research panel were asked for their assessment of the current state and their service expectations regarding online shopping and parcel delivery. The survey started on Black Friday and ran for a period of 3 weeks. The evaluation was based on responses from nearly 2,000 participants.
28 Questions on the Topic
In the E-Commerce Monitor 2021, 28 questions addressed topics from previous years. Panel participants provided information on their general ordering frequency, willingness to pay for postal services, choice of parcel service provider, relevance of tracking, and service expectations for delivery and returns. In evaluating the information on alternative delivery locations, demographic factors such as age and population size of the place of residence were considered, as in 2020.
On the other hand, the E-Commerce Monitor 2021 addresses current trends and developments. Users were asked about the impact of the Corona pandemic on their shopping behavior and what delivery times they expect for their purchases. The newly added questions about sustainability in delivery logistics also provide interesting insights.

Study Helps Service Providers
The results of the nationwide online study provide companies in postal services, logistics, and e-commerce with insightful knowledge about consumer perspectives on online shopping and last-mile delivery.
The following insights can be anticipated: The neighbor remains the most popular alternative to direct delivery for all age groups. Although a large majority of respondents wish for improved working conditions for delivery personnel, this is not reflected in their willingness to pay: the majority expects free shipping and returns. However, half of the respondents are willing to pay a premium for environmentally friendly packaging and transport.
