20. February 2021Nordfrost is further expanding its seaport terminal in the container port of Wilhelmshaven as a food hub. The current construction phase includes a deep-freeze high-bay warehouse and a spacious food hygiene area. The hygiene area has now been completed and put into operation after passing the official inspection.
(Wilhelmshaven) The Nordfrost seaport terminal currently offers customers a storage capacity of 105,000 pallet spaces, divided equally into three temperature ranges: deep-freeze, fresh, and dry. The fresh terminal began operations in July 2012, shortly before the official opening of the container port. The dry storage halls for various goods located in the northern building complex were opened in September 2018. The deep-freeze facility started storing its first pallet in January 2018. This also marked the launch of the first hygiene area, a so-called white area for food processing. Since then, products have been packaged according to customer specifications, such as freshly delivered meat products being boxed and then shock-frozen and stored – services that Nordfrost also offers at other locations nationwide.
Contract Filling in Various Packaging Types
Now, the newly constructed second hygiene area at the southern end of the building complex has commenced operations. This area is located in front of the high-bay warehouse and consists of a multifunctional hall and four separate production halls, each measuring 10 m x 60 m, plus ancillary rooms. Depending on customer requirements, Nordfrost will now equip the individual areas with automatic systems, for example, for contract filling of chilled and non-chilled foods in various packaging types and formats with individual designs (bags, folding boxes, vacuum, cartons, etc.). A multi-head scale connected to a bagging machine is already in operation. Frozen items from bulk containers are filled into smaller consumer units for the respective country markets.
The customers now have a total of around 5,000 m² of white area available for outsourcing process steps directly at the port. Production and storage operate at the highest quality level, certified according to IFS Food and IFS Logistics, both at a higher level, as well as according to organic quality standards. During the subsequent container congestion, there are no weight restrictions for transport in the port when the logistics provider sends the goods on their sea journey via the adjacent container terminal Wilhelmshaven. The official clearance as well as the organization and implementation of the entire supply chain, including combined transport, are in their hands.
New Administration Building Also Occupied
The new administration building for the terminal’s administration was also occupied at the beginning of the year. In October of this year, the high-bay warehouse for an additional 40,000 deep-frozen pallet spaces with automatic loading and unloading of trucks will go into operation. Thus, the family-owned company has invested around 200 million euros in the Nordfrost seaport terminal in the port’s logistics zone. Shippers from the food industry and other sectors are thrilled and receive all services here. Germany’s only container deep-water port also boasts excellent nautical conditions and a unique hinterland connection.
