(Bonn; Birkirkara/Malta) DHL Express, the world’s leading provider of express services, and SmartLynx Malta announce the signing of a new cooperation agreement. As part of the partnership, DHL’s European aircraft fleet will be expanded with two recently converted cargo aircraft of the Airbus A321-200 type. These technically advanced narrow-body aircraft are the most fuel-efficient models in their class. By further expanding its fleet capacity, DHL Express responds to the continuing global demand for express logistics while simultaneously improving its CO2 balance.
Continuous Modernization of the Fleet
SmartLynx is part of the Avia Solutions Group, the largest corporate group in the aerospace sector in Central and Eastern Europe, and has extensive experience operating the A321 aircraft family. For the Maltese subsidiary of SmartLynx, the agreement marks a new milestone in its entry into the cargo market. “DHL sees itself as a global thought leader in the industry, including the introduction of a new generation of converted cargo aircraft,” explains Geoff Kehr, Senior Vice President Global Air Fleet Management at DHL Express. “The continuous modernization of our fleet with the most efficient and reliable cargo aircraft is crucial to our success. With the development and successful implementation of the A330-300P2F, we have already demonstrated our leading position. Therefore, it is a logical consequence that we now complement our global freighter fleet with the smaller A321 family.”
Additional Cargo Flights Required
The partnership is a reaffirming sign of SmartLynx Malta’s reputation in the aviation industry and its support for the increasing demand for air freight capacities. Given the rising shipping needs for e-commerce goods and very important protective and medical supplies, additional cargo flights are required. The fuel-efficient Airbus A321-200 emits significantly less CO2 than comparable freighter models in its class. By investing in these aircraft, SmartLynx Malta underscores its commitment to cleaner and more sustainable air freight transport. “We are pleased with the latest addition to our customer portfolio. With the two cargo aircraft, we support our partner DHL in meeting the growing demand for air freight,” reports Zygimantas Surintas, CEO of SmartLynx Malta. “We sincerely thank the entire DHL team for their trust that we are both willing and able to meet all expectations with the provision of high-quality products. This development is an important milestone for our future strategic plan. Strong partnerships with leading air transport companies like DHL are essential for the further clean and sustainable expansion of our business.” SmartLynx Malta plans to introduce two additional A321F by the end of 2021, as well as up to four more aircraft by the end of 2022, aiming to become one of the largest transport companies in the narrow-body aircraft sector within the next three years.
