8. March 2021With sustainable solutions, SSI Schäfer strengthens the logistics of its customers and contributes to achieving the climate goals of the United Nations. To this end, SSI Schäfer has joined the initiative ’50 Sustainability and Climate Leaders’ as the first intralogistics provider, helping to achieve the 17 climate goals of the UN.
(Neunkirchen/Sieg) Climate change remains the world’s greatest challenge despite the Corona pandemic, as noted in the ‘World Risk Report’ by the World Economic Forum (WEF) (www.weforum.org/reports/the-global-risks-report-2021). What should inspire us is the enormous opportunity that real climate protection measures offer. As the first provider in intralogistics, SSI Schäfer has joined the initiative of the ’50 Sustainability and Climate Leaders’. With the goal of promoting sustainable and efficient logistics and strengthening the logistics of companies, the intralogistics specialist aims to contribute to achieving the 17 climate goals of the United Nations.
Steffen Bersch, CEO of the SSI Schäfer Group, states: “The initiative we have joined is aligned with the goals of sustainable development of the United Nations. We at SSI Schäfer also commit ourselves to these goals. As an internationally leading provider of storage and logistics systems, we have long been engaged with sustainable solutions. We need an economically efficient and sustainable logistics organization to reduce energy consumption, CO2 emissions, and costs while promoting short supply chains and healthy working conditions.”

The following references exemplify how SSI Schäfer acts as an enabler for its customers with sustainable logistics to achieve the following goals of sustainable development of the UN (https://sdgs.un.org/goals):
Goal 2: End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture.
Goal 7: Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all.
Goal 9: Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization, and foster innovation.
Goal 11: Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable.
Goals 2, 7, and 9
In the area of food safety and high throughput performance, for example, the energy-efficient, highly automated distribution center of the logistics service provider ORCA Cold Chain Solutions in the Philippines can be highlighted. One of the challenges in the food industry is that up to 37% of the food produced worldwide is lost due to inadequate packaging, storage, and handling. With the logistics solution integrated by SSI Schäfer, the integrity of all goods can be ensured, and accountability as well as 100% traceability of the goods can be increased. Additionally, electricity costs have been reduced by almost 35%.
Goals 7 and 9
With an innovative concept and technology deployment, SSI Schäfer realized a reliable and future-proof distribution center for Pepperl+Fuchs with approximately 28,000 storage spaces. Equipped with energy-efficient hardware and aimed at reducing space requirements, the automated solution utilizes the capabilities of Pepperl+Fuchs sensors in conjunction with SSI Schäfer logistics software for an innovative and tailored solution for predictive maintenance.
Goals 2, 7, 9, and 11
According to the UN forecast that by 2030, 80% of the population will live in cities, along with the expected population growth, the demand for food production will exceed our most valuable resources. Infarm and SSI Schäfer collaborated to enable the transition from traditional agriculture to automated ‘vertical’ farming. Vertical farms are crucial for making cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable. Compared to traditional farming, the innovative solution is up to 400 times more efficient (i.e., on 25 m², farmers can produce the equivalent of almost 2 hectares of arable land), it uses 95% less water, 75% less fertilizer, and operates entirely without chemical pesticides.
