10. March 2021The ports of Aschaffenburg, Bamberg, Nuremberg, Roth, Regensburg, and Passau, which are part of bayernhafen GmbH & Co. KG, achieved a cargo turnover of 8.75 million tons by inland ship and rail in the 2020 financial year. Despite Corona, this is 94% of the cargo turnover of 2019. A strong testament to the supply relevance of the bayernhafen locations.
(Munich) bayernhafen consolidates various goods and shifts long-distance traffic with the appropriate infrastructure away from the road to the two more environmentally friendly modes of transport: inland shipping and rail. Even and especially in times of crisis, essential goods must reliably reach us, and likewise, the products of Bavarian companies must reach their customers. In 2020, bayernhafen handled a total of 8.75 million tons of goods via its six locations in Aschaffenburg, Bamberg, Nuremberg, Roth, Regensburg, and Passau – this is 94% of the previous year’s cargo turnover. This corresponds to approximately 1,400 saved truck trips per day, with an average load of 17.2 tons.
More Ship and Less Rail Handling
The ship cargo handling in 2020 amounted to 3.158 million tons, which is 6.5% more than in the 2019 financial year. In contrast, rail handling decreased by 11.6% compared to 2019 to 5.593 million tons. bayernhafen proves itself, especially in times of crisis, as a guarantor of traffic shift: bayernhafen customers ensure functioning supply chains for food and other essential goods every day. Industrial and commercial companies rely on rail and inland shipping for long distances as an alternative to trucks because bayernhafen efficiently links the modes of transport with its interface competence. This sustainably contributes to the fact that transport modes can play to their strengths, relieving roads and saving CO2.
Agricultural goods, building materials, food, fuels, and industrial goods such as machinery and automotive parts, as well as heavy cargo, are transported by ship and rail at the bayernhafen locations.
“At each of our locations, we consolidate goods of all kinds,” says bayernhafen Managing Director Joachim Zimmermann, “on this basis, we link the two more environmentally friendly modes of transport, inland shipping and rail, for long distances with trucks for short distances. Even and especially in a year like 2020, port operations ran reliably. Functioning supply chains are the be-all and end-all of our society. Many people truly understood this in 2020.”
KV Network Expanded in Crisis
In combined transport, 403,931 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent units) were handled, which is 89% of the previous year’s volume. In addition to containers in seaport hinterland traffic, this includes swap bodies and semi-trailers in continental and alpine-crossing traffic.
New cross-border freight train connections were also added during the crisis in 2020: Since October, Aschaffenburg has been connected to Novara in Northern Italy. Since November, there has been a direct connection from Nuremberg to the seaport of Trieste. “Even in these times, we have realized forward-looking projects with our partners,” says Joachim Zimmermann. Since February 1, 2021, the AlbatrosExpress connects bayernhafen Passau with Hamburg, Bremerhaven, Bremen, and Wilhelmshaven. Now all five trimodal bayernhafen locations Aschaffenburg, Bamberg, Nuremberg, Regensburg, and Passau are regularly connected to the German seaports by rail.
In 2020, bayernhafen continued the high investment level of previous years and initiated investments of around 17 million euros across all locations for the preparation of areas and its port infrastructure over several years.
New Settlements at bayernhafen Locations
Resident companies also invested in 2020. For example, in bayernhafen Regensburg, the Horst Pöppel Spedition put a new multi-user warehouse with rail connection into operation in March. Food/Non-Food products from Italy, such as wine, arrive by rail. From Regensburg, these are distributed to the distribution centers of the food retail sector.
In May, the energy supplier MaierKorduletsch put its new wood pellet silo storage into operation in bayernhafen Passau. The three silo towers, each 30 meters high, provide space for a total of 4,500 tons of this renewable energy source.
Since July, trucks in bayernhafen Nuremberg can refuel liquefied natural gas. The initiators and operators of the new LNG filling station are the Neumarkter energy supplier Rödl energie and the Munich-based BayWa Mobility Solutions GmbH.
“As a location architect, we create the conditions for the settlement of logistics-intensive companies in close proximity to rail and waterways,” says Joachim Zimmermann, “with strategic land management, we consistently rely on land recycling instead of land consumption – another strong plus of our business model. Environmental protection is also very important to us: Clearly, industrial, commercial, and transport areas are our core business, but they can be excellently combined with natural areas. Examples of this are our planned ecological compensation area in Regensburg and the habitat connectivity concept in Aschaffenburg.”
