After Leipzig, East Midlands (UK), and Brussels, Malpensa is the fourth largest European DHL hub. The investment volume amounts to 110 million euros in state-of-the-art technology and operational facilities.
(Bonn, Milano) DHL Express has launched its new logistics center at Malpensa Airport. With the new location near Milan, the company expands its capacities in Europe and emphasizes its commitment to continuously improving service quality for its customers. In the new state-of-the-art hub, DHL can process over 38,000 shipments per hour using the latest sorting and scanning systems and operates over 30 flights daily. The new location employs 900 people. During peak times (high seasons), this number could increase by another ten percent.
Rising Demand for Express Services
“The pandemic is not only changing our current lives but also our future. In particular, globalization and digitalization play a crucial role in the economic recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic. They enable e-commerce and cross-border trade, leading to an increasing demand for express services. With our new logistics hub in Italy, we are responding to this demand while simultaneously improving the international connectivity of markets,” says Alberto Nobis, CEO of DHL Express Europe. After Leipzig, East Midlands (UK), and Brussels, Malpensa is the fourth largest European DHL hub. The construction completion fully implemented the GoGreen requirements regarding sustainability, safety, and efficiency set by Deutsche Post DHL Group for the new facilities.
New Facility Combines Two Process Steps
The new facility combines two process steps along the express value chain under one roof: the hub manages and processes international cargo flights, while a directly connected service center handles the so-called “last mile,” i.e., the pickup or delivery to business or private customers. “The hub at Malpensa Airport is the flagship of our strategy to strengthen our business in Italy. The goal of our ambitious investment plan of a total of 350 million euros for the country is to establish partnerships with companies that produce top Italian products and export them to the world,” says Nazzarena Franco, CEO of DHL Express Italy.
Supporting Growth of Italian Exports
“We experienced no interruptions due to the pandemic and have always strived to meet the demand of businesses, particularly in supporting them in foreign markets. Thanks to dynamic companies and highly innovative supply chains in sectors such as IT, textiles, fashion, aviation, and automotive, one-third of the country’s exports come from Lombardy. With the new hub, we aim to contribute to the growth of Italian exports,” Franco further explains. In the new hub, express shipments to and from Italy will be processed via the national airports of Ancona, Pisa, and Naples. Additionally, shipments to and from Europe will transit through Leipzig, Brussels, Paris, Valencia, Vitoria, London, East Midlands, Cologne, Zagreb, Athens, Budapest, and Thessaloniki, as well as outside Europe to Bahrain, Seoul, and Cincinnati (USA). Since December 30, 2020, DHL Express has been managing the delivery of Covid-19 vaccines from the Malpensa hub and their distribution to regional and national Italian health institutions.
