17. March 2021Deutsche Post DHL is investing a total of around 250 million euros in new sorting technology from BEUMER Group. The newly developed medium-format sorter is specifically designed for processing small and medium-sized shipments and enables an additional sorting capacity of 14,000 packages per hour per location. The medium-format sorter is being piloted at the parcel center in Greven, North Rhine-Westphalia. Eight more locations are planned.
(Bonn, Beckum) – The logistics company Deutsche Post DHL Group and the intralogistics provider BEUMER Group have signed a contract for the deployment of a new and innovative sorting technology in selected parcel centers. The newly developed medium-format sorter is specifically designed for processing small and medium-sized shipments up to the size of a shoebox (45 cm x 35 cm x 25 cm) and with a maximum weight of four kilograms. This new distribution system allows for even more efficient sorting through format separation and creates significant additional sorting capacities at the respective locations. Deutsche Post DHL is investing around 250 million euros in the installation of the new system technology, which is set to be implemented by 2023 in a total of eight additional parcel centers alongside the pilot location in Greven.
Strong Increase in Small to Medium-Sized Shipments
“In a continuously growing e-commerce market, we need to create new sorting capacities in our parcel network to meet the increased demand in various regions. We are particularly observing a strong increase in small to medium-sized shipments. By tailoring the new medium-format sorter developed by BEUMER Group specifically for processing these shipments, it not only ensures an additional capacity increase but also significantly more efficient processes in the respective parcel centers,” says Thomas Schneider, Operations Manager Post & Parcel Germany at Deutsche Post DHL Group.
“We are happy and proud that we were able to convince Deutsche Post DHL Group of our innovative concept for medium-format sorting and look forward to further successful collaboration and thank you for your trust,” says Thomas Wiesmann, Head of Sales Logistic Systems at BEUMER Group.
Ready for Use Before Christmas 2021
The medium-format sorter will be piloted at the parcel center in Greven, North Rhine-Westphalia. For this purpose, the parcel center will receive an extension that is 35 meters wide and 126 meters long, covering a total area of about 4,400 square meters, connecting the two arms of the currently U-shaped building. The new sorting technology will be installed starting in May 2021. This will increase the sorting capacity of the parcel center by more than 40 percent – by 14,000 shipments to a total of 45,000 shipments per hour. The new system will be operational at the parcel center in Greven by the pre-Christmas business of 2021.
After successful piloting in Greven, the new medium-format sorter is also set to be deployed in 2022 at the locations of Regensburg, Speyer, Neuwied, and Neumünster. Four additional locations are planned for 2023. With the new medium-format sorters in the nine parcel centers, an additional sorting capacity of a total of 126,000 shipments per hour will be created in the DHL parcel network.
