11. April 2021With a total tonnage of 4.45 million tons, the Hamburg Port was able to surpass the record result of 2019 by two percent in its traffic with Austria last year. 90 trains per week connect Hamburg with Austria. A good development is still expected for 2021.
(Hamburg) For Austria, the Hamburg Universal Port is one of the most important hubs for the global import and export of goods. This is also reflected in the transshipment results from the past year. With an increase of two percent and a tonnage of 4.45 million tons, the Hamburg Port achieved a record result in its traffic with Austria. The year 2020 was thus, in terms of tonnage, the most successful year since records began in the 1950s. The year 2019 had already marked a record year with 4.36 million tons, which has now been improved upon.
One of the most successful routes between Hamburg and Austria is utilized by voestalpine. Last year alone, the group imported 1.3 million tons of ores through the Hansaport terminal. In a circular flow, products for export are sent back to Hamburg in containers with slightly modified wagons.
Collaboration Further Strengthened
In the container sector, the second-best result in history was achieved with 301,000 TEU. For Alexander Till, representative of Hafen Hamburg Marketing in Vienna, the result is all the more gratifying, as there were months of restrictions due to lockdowns in Austria, as in many other countries around the world. “The trusting collaboration between Austrian companies and the Hamburg Port was further strengthened during the pandemic,” emphasizes Till.
The basis for this positive development is formed by the strong economic relations between Hamburg and Austria, as well as the high number of container block train connections. Currently, 90 trains per week connect the Elbe port with the Alpine Republic. For the year 2021, Alexander Till continues to expect a positive development of the volumes.
