13. April 2021The new Volvo FM from Volvo Trucks has won the Red Dot Award 2021 in the Product Design category for commercial vehicles. The Volvo FM was developed with a specific focus: it is intended to be the optimal working tool for a wide range of transport tasks, with drivers always at the forefront.
(Ismaning) The new Volvo FM has focused from day one on improving the driver’s workplace – through targeted and award-winning design. The ‘Red Dot’ award has established itself internationally as one of the most sought-after quality seals for good design. The competition was established in 1955 at the Design Center North Rhine-Westphalia in Essen. Today’s Red Dot jury consists of around 50 international experts.
The development of the new Volvo FM is based on extensive analyses and customer surveys that confirmed the importance of drivers in terms of profitability and the image of transport companies. Therefore, the design team set out to create the best mobile office in the industry. The result is a versatile truck that is agile, spacious, and above all safe and comfortable for all drivers.
Great Recognition
“The Red Dot Award is a great recognition for the creative work of the Volvo Trucks design team. The award honors a balanced Volvo FM that also creates economic value for its owner. Through the pragmatic design of the exterior, the interior, and its user-friendliness, we improve the daily lives of our drivers, and the Volvo FM also helps keep our society running,” says Carin Larsson, Volvo Trucks Chief Designer UX.
The new Volvo FM features numerous innovations that offer a higher level of comfort, safety, and productivity, such as the spacious new cabin and improved visibility through the lowered door lines. Additionally, there are new rearview mirrors and an optional camera on the passenger side that provides a complete view of the passenger side of the truck. The Volvo FM can also be tailored for significant fuel and CO2 savings.
User-Friendly Interface
The interior is enhanced by a new dashboard and a high-resolution dynamic 12-inch display. The user-friendly interface was designed to simplify interactions for drivers and minimize distractions when accessing important information. It is also prepared for future updates and mobile services.
The exterior design of the Volvo FM emphasizes its versatility for various applications. The cabin has a new aerodynamic shape with clear, distinctive lines. Furthermore, the V-shaped headlights ensure optimal aerodynamics and a distinctive look. The front grille with a new mesh pattern gives the vehicle a striking, confident appearance.
The new Volvo FM was launched in 2020 alongside the Volvo FH, Volvo FH16, and Volvo FMX. All four new truck models have been produced in series since March 2021.

The Red Dot Award is an international design competition that was founded more than 60 years ago. Outstanding design is selected by expert juries in the areas of Product Design, Brands & Communication Design, and Design Concept. Products from more than 60 countries participated in the 2021 competition.
