15. April 2021Due to the current market conditions, the shipping company Hapag-Lloyd is ordering 150,000 TEU standard and reefer containers as well as 8,000 TEU special containers this year to meet the high demand. The investment volume amounts to 550 million USD.
(Hamburg) Hapag-Lloyd is once again increasing investments in its container fleet in light of the current situation – similar to how the container shipping company reacted in 2020 to the pandemic. The shipping company now requires significantly more than the normal number of boxes to transport the same volume, as containers are being returned more slowly.
The container shipping company has ordered 150,000 TEU standard containers as well as modern refrigerated containers from China. Some boxes were already delivered to Hapag-Lloyd in the first quarter of 2021 and integrated into the existing container fleet. The majority will be delivered over the coming months. Additionally, Hapag-Lloyd has ordered 8,000 TEU of special containers intended for oversized or hazardous goods.
Alleviating the current situation
“Container shipping is currently experiencing unprecedented demand, which has led to a shortage of containers worldwide. With the recent container orders, Hapag-Lloyd is helping to alleviate the current situation and will be able to provide its customers with significantly better service,” says Rolf Habben Jansen, CEO of Hapag-Lloyd.
The investments amount to approximately 550 million US dollars. It is one of the largest container orders in Hapag-Lloyd’s history.
