Apr 28, 2021 at 5:28 PMWith the groundbreaking for the expansion of the Aschheim site near Munich, Deutsche Post DHL lays the foundation for the largest parcel hub in Germany. Starting in 2022, up to 72,000 parcels per hour can be sorted here thanks to the connection to the existing parcel center. 500 new tariff-bound jobs will be created starting in 2022.
(Bonn, Aschheim) DHL is expanding the Aschheim parcel center to become the largest parcel hub in Germany. The groundbreaking for the new parcel center was conducted today by the Prime Minister of Bavaria, Dr. Markus Söder, and Dr. Tobias Meyer, Executive Board Member for Post & Parcel Germany of Deutsche Post DHL Group, in the presence of the First Mayor of the municipality of Aschheim, Thomas Glashauser. The new parcel center will be built adjacent to the existing Aschheim DHL parcel center. By connecting both locations via a tunnel for trucks, the largest parcel hub in Germany will be created. Starting in 2022, up to 72,000 parcels per hour can be sorted here. Deutsche Post DHL is investing a low three-digit million amount in the new parcel center.
Additional Sorting Capacities
“With the new parcel center, we are creating urgently needed additional sorting capacities in a still rapidly growing parcel market for the supply of people in the greater Munich area as well as in large parts of Upper Bavaria. We are relying not only on state-of-the-art sorting technology but also on a consistently sustainable construction concept,” explains Tobias Meyer. In addition, the company is creating around 500 new tariff-bound and social insurance-contributing jobs for the region. The new jobs will be created gradually starting from the commissioning of the new parcel center in 2022.
Unique and Green Construction Project
In line with the sustainability strategy of Deutsche Post DHL Group, the parcel center is designed according to the latest construction standards and in a particularly sustainable manner. A photovoltaic system on the roof contributes to the parcel center being partially self-sufficient with green electricity. The heating supply of the parcel center is to be provided via climate-friendly district heating, which is supplied by a regional energy provider. The energy supply company produces the heat energy mostly from geothermal sources. The sustainability concept also includes partial green roofing. This additionally acts as thermal insulation, saving energy in winter and serving as a heat shield in summer. Additionally, this greening has sound-absorbing properties.
Property Covers 67,000 m2
The new building is being constructed on an area of 67,000 square meters. The sorting capacity of the new parcel center is 40,000 parcels per hour. The connection to the existing parcel center, where up to 32,000 shipments can be sorted per hour, is made via a tunnel under Klausnerstraße with a shared entrance and parking area. Such a combination of two parcel centers is unique in Germany so far. The largest DHL parcel centers are currently located in Obertshausen near Frankfurt and in Bochum. Each can sort a maximum of 50,000 shipments per hour. Another parcel center of the same size is currently being built in Ludwigsfelde near Berlin. Overall, Deutsche Post DHL Group currently operates 36 parcel centers in Germany.
