Swiss Post Transfers 50 Million Francs to the Federal Government
28. April 2021Aschheim Becomes Germany’s Largest Parcel Hub
28. April 2021In Allhaming, Upper Austria, the most modern logistics center in Austria is being built. The Post is expanding its parcel center in the Linz-Land district, which has been in operation since 2014, by approximately 125,000 m², securing over 700 existing jobs and creating more than 200 new ones at the start of operations.
(Vienna/Allhaming) The groundbreaking for this flagship project took place today in the presence of Jutta Enzinger, Mayor of Allhaming, Mag. Thomas Stelzer, Governor of Upper Austria, Mag. Manfred Hageneder, District Administrator of Linz-Land, and DI Peter Umundum, Board Member for Parcel & Logistics of Austrian Post.
The Post has been sustainably investing in the expansion of its logistics infrastructure for years. This is necessitated by the massively increasing parcel volumes, primarily driven by the booming online trade. As the market leader in parcel logistics in Austria, the Post transported a total of 166 million parcels in 2020 – over 30 percent more than the previous year. This year, a double-digit percentage increase is also expected.
“All eyes in logistics are on Allhaming today. What is being created here is forward-looking: the most modern logistics center in Austria, which with a sorting capacity of up to 32,000 parcels per hour not only enables a new dimension of parcel distribution but is also a showcase project in terms of sustainability,” said Peter Umundum at today’s groundbreaking.
Strengthening the Economic Location of Upper Austria
“The expansion of the operation in Allhaming to the most modern logistics center in Austria means a further strengthening of the economic location of Upper Austria. This not only secures jobs in the region but also creates numerous new jobs. It is particularly pleasing that this project places a special focus on resource conservation and sustainability,” emphasizes Governor Thomas Stelzer the significance of the expansion for the Allhaming region.
“The Post has presented a comprehensive concept for noise protection and the reduction of light emissions. Additionally, the new building is located more than 700 meters away from the nearest settlement, thus causing no immediate disturbance to the residents living here. Furthermore, traffic lights will be installed at the highway on- and off-ramps, which will increase traffic safety on the Marchtrenker Landesstraße. Thus, we have managed to successfully reconcile the interests of citizens, neighbors, and the builder and look forward to the additional jobs that this expansion will bring,” explains Jutta Enzinger.
Record Sorting Capacity of 32,000 Parcels per Hour
On a plot of land of approximately 200,000 m², a building complex with nearly 50,000 m² of usable space is being constructed, which includes the logistics center along with office spaces and an integrated delivery base. Since the existing center is being expanded, existing structures can be reused and brought up to the latest technology standards. The current sorting capacity of a maximum of 10,500 parcels will be increased to up to 32,000 parcels per hour by the end of 2022 through the use of state-of-the-art cross-belt sorters. This will allow the Post to handle the continuously increasing parcel volumes much more efficiently and transport them to their customers even faster.
Sustainability in Focus
The Post is also committed to acting as ecologically as possible and implementing comprehensive measures in the area of sustainability. A photovoltaic system with a capacity of around 500 kWp will be installed on the roof of the logistics center, which will supply not only the center but also the electric fleet operated at the site. To ensure efficient and sustainable commuting for employees, a corporate mobility management system will be implemented, which includes company buses, carpooling, bicycle use, and parking spaces with charging stations for electric cars and e-bikes. The green spaces around the logistics center will be designed with a focus on biodiversity and managed in an environmentally friendly manner. Additionally, a biotope will be created on the new site, nesting boxes will be hung, and wild bees will be settled.
