May 19, 2021 at 5:28 PMRhenus Automotive opened a production site in Shenyang, China, on April 26, for the manufacturing of front and rear axles for a new BMW vehicle model. The automotive logistics specialist of the Rhenus Group will now act as a Tier-1 supplier for the BMW plant in Dadong, located about ten kilometers away. In addition, Rhenus will take over the procurement of all upstream components, quality management, and the management of the global supplier network.
(Holzwickede/Shenyang) At the opening of the plant, Rhenus welcomed representatives from the BMW Group, as well as the German Consul General and the Mayor of the million-strong metropolis of Shenyang. The start of axle production followed an 18-month preparation phase. In addition to establishing Rhenus Automotive’s first production site in China, this phase also included the founding of an Asia holding company in Shanghai, which manages the overarching processes and further development of Rhenus Automotive in China.
“We have succeeded in developing highly automated systems that combine the concepts and technologies of Industry 4.0 and smart manufacturing. The result is highly interconnected components, tools, and systems that meet the high customer requirements regarding output and quality perfectly,” summarizes Dr. Marcus Ewig, Managing Director of Rhenus Automotive.
Area of 20,000 square meters
The site operated exclusively for the BMW Group covers an area of approximately 20,000 square meters. Around one hundred suppliers deliver the components needed for axle manufacturing to the Rhenus plant. The production of the axles goes through about 20 stations.
The finished vehicles are intended for the Asian market, particularly China. “China is an important growth market for us that we have been keeping an eye on for years. The current market entry is a deliberate choice, as we expect significant dynamics in the coming years. In addition to the well-known OEMs, more and more local partners are introducing alternative production concepts to the market,” says Dr. Marcus Ewig.
Rhenus Automotive is represented worldwide at 67 locations, including China and Germany, as well as in the USA, Belgium, Poland, Spain, and Russia.
