(Cologne) “Naming has a certain tradition for us. Previously, the three ships bore names of South African cities to highlight our affiliation with our former shareholder. Now, with the new names, we clearly express our connection to our parent company and thus also to the city of Cologne,” explains Steffen Bauer, CEO of HGK Shipping, the reasons behind this change. Thus, the “Richards Bay” has become the “Stadt Köln”, the “Kapstadt” has been renamed to “Godorf”, and the former “Durban” has been renamed to “Niehl I”.
Registered in the Ship Register
All three vessels are owned by HGK Shipping and have already been painted in the new red and white colors. “Niehl I” and “Godorf” are each 85 meters long and 9.50 meters wide. Both freighters can carry about 1400 tons of cargo. The “Stadt Köln” measures 100 x 11 meters and can transport up to 2000 tons of freight. The new names have been registered in the respective ship register. The ship registration number also allows for identification in case of name similarities with other vessels. “We are very pleased with the initiative of HGK Shipping. This shows that the ships, the company, and all employees have arrived at the right port,” says Uwe Wedig, Chairman of the Board of HGK AG. Photo: © HGK
