3. June 2021BIEK Releases KEP Position Paper for the Federal Election
3. June 2021In Hamburg, a summit meeting of the port industry took place with the port policy spokespersons of the Bürgerschaft factions. “The port has the potential to become the innovation driver of the city,” emphasizes Prof. Norbert Aust, President of the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce.
“The basis of the new port development plan must therefore be a comprehensive, independent potential analysis of the port, which also includes benchmarking with other international ports. It is important that the value creation effects of the port for the entire Hamburg economy and all of Germany are taken into account. We need to create an additional breeding ground for innovation, for example in the area of climate change, and become a technology leader to make the port a motor and innovation driver from which many other industries can benefit. For this, the relevant stakeholders of the port must be involved in a transparent, well-designed dialogue process,” says Aust.
Comments from the participating port policy spokespersons:
Markus Schreiber (SPD): “The summit meeting on the port is a great initiative by the Chamber of Commerce with a lot of port expertise. Benchmarking with other major ports makes sense. It will show that the Hamburg port is much better than it is sometimes discussed.”
Dr. Miriam Putz (THE GREENS): “As an economic engine and export port for Northern Europe, the Hamburg port has a central economic significance. We want to further develop the port into an ecological innovation port and innovation driver for the entire region. A transparently developed potential analysis and sharpening of the benchmarking are helpful for successful, long-term port development.”
Prof. Dr. Götz Wiese (CDU): “A port development plan must come quickly now so that the great potential of our port can be realized. This requires a sound analysis. But time is pressing.”
Norbert Hackbusch (THE LEFT): “Hamburg needs good information to organize an active port policy in the interest of good jobs.”
Regular Future Dialogue
The summit meeting of the port industry serves as a regular future dialogue between political representatives and other stakeholders of the port. The results will be incorporated into the new port development plan of the city of Hamburg, which is to be completed by the Authority for Economy and Innovation by the end of 2021.
