Jun 3, 2021 at 5:33 PMVTG AG equips 70 units of its double pocket wagon fleet with Kingpin sensors from Nexxiot. It is a maintenance-free sensor for monitoring the loading condition of intermodally used semi-trailers on pocket wagons. For now, this is a test series under real conditions. If successful, the rest of the fleet is to be equipped starting in November.
(Hamburg) In combined transport, special care is required when transferring semi-trailers to pocket wagons. Adverse conditions, such as strong winds, steep gradients, or incorrectly positioned kingpins, can compromise loading safety if not carefully checked. Together, Nexxiot and VTG are advancing the topic of safety and expanding their collaboration: VTG is testing the Kingpin Monitor from Nexxiot in a field trial, a completely maintenance-free sensor solution for monitoring the loading condition of semi-trailers on pocket wagons.
Value Added in the Supply Chain
The sensors are currently being tested on 70 double pocket wagons under real operational conditions with highly sensitive and demanding cargo. Following the successful completion of the test series and confirmation that the technology creates significant value in the supply chain, the equipping of the double pocket wagon fleet with the sensor is planned for November 2021. The rollout is expected to be completed in 2022. This further investment by VTG enhances the safety of its fleet and expands its innovation lead. Dr. Hanno Schell, Head of Technical Innovation at VTG, explains: “The Kingpin sensor contributes to improving our digital efficiency and safety, and we are convinced that it will establish a market standard. As an innovation leader, we know that quality and responsibility are highly valued by our customers. Therefore, we seize every opportunity to enable better services and more trust in rail freight transport.”
Data Consolidated on a Platform
The sensor used by VTG and Nexxiot responds to the final position of the locking mechanism and the correct position of the kingpin in the funnel of the support block. The status is displayed by LED lights on a display module mounted on both sides of the wagon. The data collected and transmitted by the Nexxiot sensor is consolidated on the VTG platform. This allows both on-site staff and dispatchers and decision-makers to see the status of the trailer in real-time. This means that at any point during transport, the loading condition can be checked. Additionally, the sensor data can be used to confirm or trigger automated events. Furthermore, it is possible to link with other operational processes to ensure a seamless connection of the safety-enhancing components. In the event of an accident, the collected data can also provide information.
Automated Real-Time Alarm Notifications
Stefan Kalmund, CEO of Nexxiot, explains: “If more goods are to be shifted from road to rail in the future, it must be ensured that this is done safely. With the Kingpin sensor, we provide a state-of-the-art digital solution to prevent accidents and support employees in their processes. The sensor provides continuous feedback on the status both during loading and throughout the journey. By using real-time communication and automated alarm notifications, the user is immediately alerted if the locking status changes. I am convinced that the implementation of this innovation by VTG will lay the foundation for sustainable change in the industry.”The use of sensor technology has become a widespread digitization measure in the rail freight transport industry. As such, the new sensor solution represents an additional safety measure and simultaneously serves as an important aid for customers and loading personnel. Especially in darkness, it provides on-site staff with more reliability. Crane operators and ground staff are experienced in handling trailers, but in poor visibility conditions, they often have to conduct inspections with flashlights and rely on an acoustic signal emitted by the kingpin when it correctly locks into the funnel of the support block. Here, the sensor provides optical support with its LED display.
Setting New Standards in the Use of Digital Assets
With this project, VTG sets new standards in the use of digital assets and data-driven value creation for customers. VTG Connect, a cloud service supported by Nexxiot technology, as well as various compatible sensors, open up new digital possibilities that are continuously being developed. The safety aspect is always at the center of considerations, as errors can lead to high costs in many ways. As part of the innovation project “Status-oriented and predictive maintenance by VTG Rail Europe,” the European Union is promoting the digitization of rail freight transport through sensors. The project is co-financed by the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) of the European Union.
