8. June 2021On today’s World Oceans Day, DHL Express and the environmental organization Ozeankind e.V. draw a consistently positive conclusion about the support from the company. Despite the restrictions caused by the Corona pandemic, environmental projects in Zanzibar could be implemented with this help.
(Bonn) DHL Express had presented the organization with collected donations amounting to 6,000 euros at the end of last year to implement projects for environmental protection and the reduction of plastic waste. Despite the restrictions caused by the Corona pandemic, environmental projects in Zanzibar could be implemented with this help.
“Sustainability is an essential part of our new corporate strategy 2025,” explains Markus Reckling, CEO of DHL Express Germany. “Our company operates in over 220 countries and territories and is committed worldwide to improving the climate balance and addressing social issues,” Reckling continues. “We are pleased that we could support Ozeankind e.V. with our donation in bringing environmental protection and the reduction of plastic waste closer to children.”
Children Exchange Plastic Bottles for School and Sports Items
With the help of the donation from DHL Express, Ozeankind opened a second so-called SwopShop in Paje, Zanzibar, where children can exchange collected plastic bottles for school and sports items, for example. Additionally, the organization continuously works with local partners on school projects to integrate environmental education into the curriculum, thereby raising environmental awareness among primary school children. Here, too, children can bring collected plastic bottles to school for recycling. The value of the plastic is paid out to the schools annually, allowing them to invest the proceeds in their infrastructure. In 2020, over 188,000 PET bottles were collected and recycled through a school project and the island’s first SwopShop.
“At this point, we would like to thank DHL Express for the financial support. Only with the donations we receive can we continuously advance the topics of environmental education and recycling with our association,” summarizes Marina Schmidt, board member and co-founder of Ozeankind. A third SwopShop in Zanzibar is already in planning.
