6. July 2021GDP Network Solutions Successfully Established in the Market for One Year
6. July 2021By participating in the ‘Lean and Green’ program, Loxxess aims to reduce CO2 emissions by at least 20 percent. The global network GS1 awards the ‘Lean and Green’ star to logistics companies that have successfully implemented an action plan based on their greenhouse gas emissions. This initiative is a significant step in implementing Loxxess’s ecological sustainability strategy.
(Tegernsee) The logistics and fulfillment service provider Loxxess AG aims to contribute to climate protection by participating in the ‘Lean and Green’ program, defining and gradually implementing a comprehensive action plan. GS1 is an international network of non-profit organizations that develops and implements global standards for internal corporate processes. With ‘Lean and Green’, GS1 Germany targets companies in the logistics and transport sectors. The program shows participating companies ways to make their value chains more efficient in several stages, reduce emissions, and contribute to achieving the climate goals of the Paris Agreement. The core idea of the concept links principles of lean management with approaches from environmental and climate protection.
Electricity from Renewable Energy Sources
Loxxess first defined a sustainability strategy in 2016, during which the company locations in Ebermannsdorf, Berlin, and Bremen were equipped with energy-saving LED lighting, and planning is also underway for the locations in Aurach and Bor. In addition, Loxxess pays attention to a high proportion of electricity from renewable energy sources in the annual tendering of electricity needs. At the multi-user campus in Bor, individual projects to promote resource efficiency have already been implemented. For example, Loxxess introduced a resource-saving reusable transport container system with the customer Vodafone, and since early 2021, colleagues have also had access to an electric car including a charging station. Furthermore, in 2020, the production and use of a total of 1,662,593 kW of solar power by Loxxess Greenpower saved 585 tons of CO2. Now, the company has decided to set specific and comprehensive goals for emission reduction across all business areas. Additionally, transparency about its own CO2 footprint will be achieved. This is done with the five-step ‘Lean and Green’ action plan. The first step involves a precise calculation of emissions for a ‘base year’. For this, Loxxess used the tool ‘planetly’, which allows for the calculation and analysis of the CO2 footprint. The accounting is done according to the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, the globally recognized standard for accounting greenhouse gas emissions. Subsequently, the company defined a catalog of measures with a projected reduction outcome, which will be checked for feasibility by TÜV NORD. Specific measures include a high proportion of green electricity, retrofitting properties with energy-saving LED lighting, and actively monitoring and determining new measures in the sustainability steering committee. After successful verification, the company receives the ‘Lean and Green Award’. Further awards can be achieved if emissions are gradually reduced in the following years.
Raising Awareness of Climate Protection Across the Company
“As a family-owned company in its third generation, we are aware of the significance our business activities today will have for future generations. With ‘Lean and Green’, we have found an ideal partner to accompany us on the path to CO2 neutrality. We also want to raise awareness of climate protection across the company and encourage participation,” says Dr. Claus-Peter Amberger, board member of Loxxess AG, regarding the importance of the program participation for Loxxess. Participation in the sustainability program includes certification as well as access to the community of member companies, allowing for benefits from the network, best practice reports, and knowledge transfer.
