JCL Logistics Focuses on Sustainability in Transportation
19. July 2021arvato Supply Chain Solutions Expands International Network
20. July 2021The German Logistics Congress will take place this year from October 20-22 as a hybrid congress. There will be an in-person component in Berlin, alongside many digital content transmissions. The focus remains on exchange, knowledge transfer, and discussion: in the plenary sessions, in the specialized sequences, and in the exhibition. Networking will also be possible, based on a dedicated safety and hygiene concept.
(Bremen/Berlin) The hygiene concept is based on official regulations and takes into account experiences and insights that BVL and its partners have gathered at other events. Additionally, expertise from the state of Berlin as well as that of epidemiologist Prof. Brinks from the University of Witten-Herdecke is incorporated. The concept thus always reflects the current state of official regulations and is continuously updated.
As an alternative to the in-person component, a purely digital participation in the congress is also possible, free of charge. A separate registration is required for this. In realizing the digital offering, BVL is taking new paths: individual program items will be sponsored by companies, which in return will gain visibility and may use participant data for outreach.
The Congress Motto: Seize Opportunities – Adapt to Lead
Content-wise, the congress is under the motto “Seize Opportunities – Adapt to Lead”. Prof. Dr. Thomas Wimmer, Chairman of the Board of BVL, is confident: “The pandemic, despite all the doomsayers, does not mean a departure from globalized goods flows. Nevertheless, processes and business models are changing. Supply Chain Management and logistics are in a phase of upheaval and constant change. More than ever, the significance of logistics has become apparent to the general public. The German Logistics Congress has rarely been more relevant.”
What technologies will influence value chains? How do we achieve true climate neutrality? How do we protect ourselves against cybercrime? High-profile speakers will share their expertise and provide exciting impulses.
Speakers at the German Logistics Congress include:
- Dorothea von Boxberg, Chairwoman of the Board, Lufthansa Cargo AG, Frankfurt; Board Member, BVL
- Siegfried Russwurm, President of the Federation of German Industries (BDI), Berlin
- Marianne Janik, Managing Director, Microsoft Germany, Munich
- Christian Erlach, Board Member, Jungheinrich AG, Hamburg
- Jörg Hofmann, First Chairman, IG Metall, Frankfurt
- Jochen Thewes, Chief Executive Officer, Schenker AG, Frankfurt
- Frank Dreeke, Chairman of the Board, BLG LOGISTICS GROUP AG & Co. KG, Bremen; Board Member, BVL
- Dr. Martin R. Stuchtey, Co-Founder and Managing Partner, SYSTEMIQ GmbH, Munich
- Felix Fiege, CEO, Fiege Group, Greven; Advisory Board Member, BVL
- Norbert Lammert, Former President of the Bundestag, Chairman of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, Berlin
Specialized Sequences on the Future Questions of Logistics
The concept group under the new leadership of Kai Althoff, CEO of 4flow AG and member of the BVL Advisory Board, has put together an attractive program with exciting lectures and discussions together with the BVL office team. In addition to the topics presented here, there will also be specialized sequences on areas such as cyber security, transformation of business models, future business fields, or supply chain integration.
Circular Economy – Opportunities and Challenges for Logistics
What approaches to circular value creation exist that sustainably change logistics requirements? What solutions is the logistics sector developing, and how can it benefit from new circular markets?
Urban Logistics
As dynamic as trade is, so too is the change in cities. The sharp increase in shipments in the KEP sector, combined with the significant challenges of recent months for brick-and-mortar retail, necessitates a rethinking of the concept of the city. Where can logistics find its place in the city? What spaces can lead to better coexistence through logistical use?
Platform Economy as Part of the New Economy
The platform economy is steadily gaining importance. In addition to visibility to customers, technological solutions (Technology on Demand) and services (Services on Demand) are playing an increasingly important role, also for the consolidation of logistics flows. But where is the platform economy heading in various sectors? What factors will be decisive for competition?
Supply Chain 4.0 – Digital Twin in the Supply Chain
Disruptions in supply chains during the pandemic or the Suez incident have shown that supply chain planning and its end-to-end transparency are more important than ever. Digital twins and their main advantages, such as advanced forecasting and thus improved resilience, are paving the way for Supply Chain Management 4.0.
Panel Discussion: On the Way to True Climate Neutrality
In the Paris Climate Agreement, the signatory states have committed to limiting global temperature rise. Currently, it seems that this goal can only be achieved if some states and industries achieve climate neutrality well before 2040. The panelists will discuss questions of climate neutrality in global logistics chains, including the last mile, from the perspective of global players and medium-sized actors.
Discussion participants include Rolf Habben-Jansen, Chairman of the Board, Hapag-Lloyd AG, Hamburg; Tim Scharwath, CEO Global Forwarding, Freight, Deutsche Post DHL Group, Bonn; Meri Stevens, Worldwide Vice President Supply Chain – Consumer Health & Deliver, Johnson & Johnson, Princeton, New Jersey, USA, as well as Dr. Sven Rutkowsky, Partner, Kearney, Dortmund.
German Logistics Award and Logistics Science Award
Wednesday evening is traditionally dedicated to the awarding of the German Logistics Award at the congress. Whether digitally connected or on-site in Berlin, BVL invites all participants to this special moment on the evening of the first congress day, when the results of the jury’s deliberations with its chairman Matthias Wissmann will be announced. The German Logistics Award honors particularly innovative and sustainable solutions to promote and encourage imitation. Those attending in person are invited to personal encounters and discussions in the foyers and exhibition areas afterwards.
On Friday morning, BVL, with the support of McKinsey, will award the Logistics Science Award. Applications for the award are possible until August 15, and the announcement is available online. The presentations of the scientists who reach the finals will take place this time as a digital pre-event before the congress.

Meet People – On-site or Digitally
For many, networking will be the focus of the in-person component of the congress this year. After the long lockdown period, there is much to catch up on. Conversations and discussions at the exhibitors’ stands, in the lounges, and at the coffee bars will be possible while considering the applicable hygiene concept.
Networking will not be neglected in the digital version either: Through the innovative tool GRIP, participants can exchange ideas and make new contacts throughout the congress.
Pre-Events
To make the digital version of the congress a bit more compact, three thematic areas will be offered in the form of pre-events digitally in advance as standalone dates. Registration for this will be possible in the coming weeks via the BVL website.
- October: Final of the Logistics Science Award 2021
The Logistics Science Award is aimed at young researchers whose academically outstanding work is particularly relevant to practice. The award also includes the supervising institutes and is endowed with €5,000 for the award winner. This year’s Logistics Science Award is supported by McKinsey & Company.
