27. July 2021The globally operating Danish transport and logistics service provider DSV, in collaboration with Jungheinrich, has established a new logistics center at its location in Vestby, south of Oslo, covering 16,000 square meters. The new building consists of a fully automated warehouse with 35,000 storage locations, operated by nine Jungheinrich EKX 516a driverless narrow aisle forklifts. An additional 25,000 manual storage locations are also part of the logistics solution.
(Hamburg/Vestby) The operation in Vestby is designed for a five-day week with two shifts. The vehicles move automatically in the 32 aisles, each 80 meters long, of the ten-meter-high high-bay warehouse. Additionally, Jungheinrich supplied the Warehouse Control System (WCS) software, which communicates with DSV’s Warehouse Management System via an interface.
Manual Feeding to the Automated Warehouse
The technical highlight in Vestby consists of an intelligent combination: The pallets are manually fed to the automated warehouse without space-consuming conveyor technology. This saves time, money, and space. The maximum 1,240 millimeter long, 840 millimeter wide, and 1,600 millimeter high Euro pallets are brought to checkpoints by manually operated Jungheinrich reach trucks from the ETV series before the automatic storage in the high-bay warehouse takes place. The entire system environment of the DSV warehouse also comes from the Hamburg-based company: the stations for contour checking of the pallets, the access controls, as well as the safety fences and gates.
Continuous Investment in Efficiency
“DSV continuously invests in the efficiency and optimization of its logistics processes,” explains Ulf Erik Kruger Solheim, Managing Director at DSV Global and Transport Logistics, regarding the strategy behind the automation project in Norway. “The long-standing collaboration and our very good experiences with Jungheinrich as a partner were decisive in awarding this project to the Hamburg company.”
Complete Solution from a Single Source
Since the order was received in November 2019, Jungheinrich has worked as the general contractor on the complete solution from a single source – from planning to implementation and subsequent customer service. Even the COVID-19 crisis and the temporary, Europe-wide border closures could not deter the intralogistics experts. To avoid jeopardizing the schedule, Jungheinrich got creative – for example, in March 2020: “In addition to 15 technicians from After-Sales, five colleagues from the Jungheinrich Logistics Systems office also helped for two weeks at a height of ten meters,” recalls Jens Gjerlaug, Manager Logistics System, Jungheinrich Norway. “This way, we were able to keep to the assembly schedule. And for the colleagues who usually work in the office, this experience was exciting and a lasting memory.”
