2. August 2021Since 2015, DACHSER and the children’s aid organization terre des hommes have been committed to enabling the San children – also known as
(Kempten/Namibia) The Corona lockdown in Namibia hit the population hard. The worst affected are the schoolchildren of the San. Due to a lack of internet access, a large number of them could not participate in online classes. The resulting interruptions in their education exacerbate the existing inequalities within the education system, as well as in all other aspects of their lives.
Young adults from the communities have therefore taken it upon themselves to volunteer in a program to help San students with their homework during the lockdown. The project is supported by DACHSER and the local partner organization of terre des hommes. One of them is 24-year-old Margret Hans, who was herself supported by a similar project and was able to successfully complete her training in the tourism sector with the help of DACHSER and terre des hommes.
Unstoppable, Even in Difficult Times
She herself lost her job as a waitress in a lodge due to the Corona crisis and the absence of tourists, but that did not deter her from positively changing the lives of others. She currently leads a team of 9 volunteer homework helpers in the town of Tsintsabis. “Tutoring a student is one of the best experiences of my life. It may sound like a cliché, but I honestly believe that I gain almost more from this experience than my students do. It just feels good to contribute to the positive development of these young people.”
Growing Up in Difficult Conditions
The children of the San usually grow up in difficult conditions. The oldest population group in southern Africa often lives in extreme poverty on large farms or in slum-like settlements on the outskirts of small towns. The project work in the three communities of Outjo, Oshivelo, and Tsintsabis in northern Namibia focuses on early support and continuous assistance to enable children to attend regular primary schools. This includes vocational training, especially for girls, to prepare them for jobs in hotels and lodges, as well as in crafts.
